Band Structure-Controlled Zn1-xCdxS Solid Solution for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production Improvement via Appropriately Enhancing Oxidation Capacity

Meiling Huang et al.

Summary: The solid solution semiconductor Zn1-xCdxS is found to be suitable for improving hydrogen production through energy band engineering. The optimal bandgap and conduction/valence band positions for hydrogen production are determined, and it is shown that enhancing oxidation capacity while maintaining reduction capacity can greatly enhance hydrogen production activity. Additionally, first-principles calculations using density functional theory (DFT) confirm the band structure composition of Zn1-xCdxS, with an optimal hydrogen production activity of 15.58mmol h(-1) g(-1). This provides a new approach for oxygen production and even overall water splitting using photocatalysis.
