Stability of surface and bulk nanobubbles

Beng Hau Tan et al.

Summary: The existence and stability of nanoscopic gaseous domains in liquids, known as nanobubbles, have been debated due to classical theory predictions. However, through critical review and experiments, it has been proven that these gaseous domains not only exist but can also survive in liquid environments. Future research directions and unanswered questions remain for further exploration in this field.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Water Decontamination by Micro-Nano Bubbles: Measurements and Mechanisms

Wei Fan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the enhanced efficiency of TiO2 photocatalytic water treatment by introducing micro-nano bubbles (MNBs), which leads to increased oxygen dissolution, improved colloidal stability and dispersion of TiO2 nanocatalysts, and interfacial photoelectric effects of TiO2/MNB suspensions. The use of MNBs also creates unique light-scattering effects and promotes high bubble-TiO2 complex stability and photocatalytic performance.

Microalgae cultivation for space exploration: Assessing the potential for a new generation of waste to human life-support system for long duration space travel and planetary human habitation

Emmanuel D. Revellame et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the potential of integrating microalgae into the existing life-support system within the International Space Station (ISS). It was found that attached-growth cultivation of A. platensis using urine and flush water within the ISS could provide significant amounts of reclaimed O2 and food supplement, but continuous supplements of nitrogen and phosphorus will be needed for sustainability. This integration could provide the capability to produce food supplement critical for long duration manned missions.

Addition of air-nanobubble water to mitigate the inhibition of high salinity on co-production of hydrogen and methane from two-stage anaerobic digestion of food waste

Tingting Hou et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of high salinity on the co-production of hydrogen and methane from two-stage AD of food waste, with the addition of Air-NBW found to increase hydrogen and methane yields. The results suggest that improvement in microbial electron transfer and enzymatic activities in each stage through Air-NBW addition could provide an efficient approach for hydrogen and methane recovery under high salinity conditions.

How bulk nanobubbles are stable over a wide range of temperatures

Mingbo Li et al.

Summary: The stability of bulk nanobubbles is temperature-sensitive, with bubble size decreasing as temperature rises until reaching a minimum and then slightly increasing. This behavior is explained by a charge-stabilization mechanism, where nanobubbles lose charge at lower temperatures and maintain charge balance at higher temperatures.

Bactericidal Activity of Bulk Nanobubbles through Active Oxygen Species Generation

Masato Yamaguchi et al.

Summary: The study found that the bactericidal effect was most significant in CO2-containing NB water, while N-2-NB water showed a slight bactericidal effect. Interestingly, the survival rate of E. coli was even higher in O-2-NB water than in pure water. The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was strongest in CO2-NB water, consistent with the bactericidal effect results.
