Obesity and Monitoring Iodine Nutritional Status in Schoolchildren: is Body Mass Index a Factor to Consider?

Simona De Angelis et al.

Summary: The study found that in monitoring the iodine prophylaxis program in Italy, obese children had lower urinary iodine concentration than children of adequate weight, and their thyroid volume and hypoechoic pattern also differed. Therefore, BMI should be considered as a factor in monitoring salt iodization programs worldwide.

The relationship of different levels of high iodine and goiter in school children: a meta-analysis

Tingting Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that when urinary iodine concentration (UIC) >= 300 mu g/L or water iodine concentration (WIC) >= 100 mu g/L, the risk of goiter development increases. Higher UIC levels were associated with a greater risk of goiter. To improve public thyroid health, monitoring of urinary iodine and water iodine levels should be maintained at appropriate levels.

Studies on urinary excretion and variability of dietary iodine in healthy Japanese adults

Yozen Fuse et al.

Summary: This study observed the urinary iodine excretion process in Japanese adults after a high dietary iodine load and assessed the variability of habitual iodine intake among university students in different seasons. The results showed rapid renal clearance of iodine after ingestion and high fluctuation in habitual iodine intake among the students, indicating a lower risk of excess iodine intake in Japan over the long term.
