Identification of suspended particulate matters as the hotspot of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degradation-related bacteria and genes in the Pearl River Estuary using metagenomic approaches

Xiuqin Xie et al.

Summary: Bacterial degradation is an important method for cleaning up polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in aquatic environments. In the Pearl River Estuary water, Proteobacteria was identified as the most abundant phylum of PAH-degrading bacteria, with PAH-degrading bacteria and PAHDGs enriched on suspended particulate matters.

Effects of phenol on extracellular polymeric substances and microbial communities from aerobic granular sludge treating low strength and salinity wastewater

Qiulai He et al.

Summary: The impact of phenol on aerobic granular sludge was investigated in terms of biological phosphorus removal and microbial community structures. Elevated phenol concentrations not only stimulated biological phosphorus removal but also enhanced the production of extracellular polymeric substances, maintaining the structural stability of the granules.

Microalgal-bacterial granular sludge process: A game changer of future municipal wastewater treatment?

Meng Zhang et al.

Summary: Future municipal wastewater treatment processes should shift towards multiple-functionality of synergetic water-resource-energy recovery and carbon neutral for maximizing environmental and economic sustainability. Current treatment technologies are unlikely to meet these requirements, while the amicroalgal-bacterial granular sludge process may provide a promising option for achieving multiple goals of municipal wastewater reclamation.

Coke wastewater treatment methods: Mini review

Lipsa Mishra et al.

Summary: The production and treatment of coke wastewater is a global issue of concern, with high BOD, COD, and nutrient content posing serious threats if discharged untreated. Chemical methods such as coagulation followed by sedimentation or flocculation, and biological methods like activated sludge process or nitrification/denitrification processes are effective in treating coke wastewater. An extensive review study has been conducted to compare the performance of various treatment methods for coke wastewater.

Temperature-effect on the performance of non-aerated microalgal-bacterial granular sludge process in municipal wastewater treatment

Bin Ji et al.

Summary: The study found that high temperatures favored organic removal, with most of the ammonia-N being removed through microbial assimilation by microalgae and bacteria, and high efficiency of phosphorus removal. The contributions of microalgal and bacterial assimilations towards COD, ammonia and P removal appeared to be temperature-dependent.

Negative effects of oxytetracycline and copper on nitrogen metabolism in an aerobic fermentation system: Characteristics and mechanisms

Honghong Guo et al.

Summary: Aerobic fermentation is a sustainable method for livestock waste treatment, but the presence of oxytetracycline (OTC) and copper (Cu) can alter nitrogen metabolism and reduce N2O emissions. Microorganisms play a significant role in nitrogen metabolism during different stages of fermentation, with OTC and Cu affecting the formation and utilization of nitrogen compounds. Organic matter is a key factor driving the variation in nitrogen-transforming microorganisms and denitrification, with Cu also negatively impacting certain microbial populations.

Effects of Acute Ammonia Stress on Antioxidant Responses, Histopathology and Ammonia Detoxification Metabolism in Triangle Sail Mussels (Hyriopsis cumingii)

Qianqian Zhao et al.

Summary: The study showed that high environmental ammonia induced an antioxidant response in Hyriopsis cumingii but it was not able to completely counteract the oxidative effects, leading to lipid peroxidation and tissue injury. Enzymes like glutamine synthetase, glutamate dehydrogenase, alanine aminotransaminase, and aspartate aminotransaminase may play a key role in ammonia detoxification in H. cumingii. These results provide insights into the mechanism of aquatic toxicology induced by ammonia in shellfish.

Summary: A full-scale coking wastewater treatment plant with a two-stage anoxic-oxic-anoxic-oxic (A1/O1/A2/O2) process was systematically investigated, showing excellent removal capacity for COD, ammonia, nitrate, and total nitrogen. The microbial community analysis revealed significant changes in bacterial communities during the AOAO process, with shifts in functional microorganisms responsible for organics and nitrogen removal. Metagenomic sequencing also indicated variations in amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism between the primary and secondary AO processes.
