Selenium oxyanion exchange with Mg(II)-Fe(III) and Fe(II)-Fe(III) layered double hydroxides

Alexandra E. P. Schellenger et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that pyroaurite-type minerals can immobilize selenium oxyanions from water resources, with uptake efficiency influenced by the identity of interlayer anions. The uptake process involves a rapid anion exchange followed by slow release, with excess dissolved interlayer anions and high pH values exacerbating the release of selenium.

Surface chemistry and structure evaluation of Mg/Al and Mg/Fe LDH derived from magnesite and dolomite in comparison to LDH obtained from chemicals

Karolina Rybka et al.

Summary: The study explored the possibility of obtaining Mg/Al and Mg/Fe LDHs without excessive use of chemical reagents by using cheaper substrates through a simplified co-precipitation synthesis at room temperature. The LDHs derived from minerals showed similar structural features as compared to the reference samples, but resulted in the formation of additional phases. The transformation procedure via simplified synthesis may significantly reduce the final cost of the adsorbents by excluding expensive chemical reagents.

Chloride Removal of Calcium Aluminate-Layered Double Hydroxide Phases: A Review

Gwangmok Kim et al.

Summary: Chlorine plays a critical role in various applications, but it can also be harmful. Calcium aluminate-layered double hydroxides, with positively charged interlayers, show promise in removing chlorides. While there have been many studies on the synthesis and characterization of these materials, research on their chloride removal characteristics is limited.

One-pot synthesis of Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) using MgO and metakaolin (MK) as precursors

Jun Zhu et al.

Summary: Highly alkaline solution promoted the dissolution of MK, resulting in the release of trivalent Al for the formation of LDH, while increasing temperature led to faster dissolution of MK and released more Al and Si, which resulted in the formation of both LDH and zeolite.

Synthesis of dense porous layered double hydroxides from struvite

W. L. Joyce Kwok et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a novel atom economic synthesis method for a new type of dense porous layered double hydroxides using struvite, a common waste product from wastewater treatment plants. The resulting SLDHs have significantly higher specific surface areas and larger pore volumes compared to conventional coprecipitated LDHs while maintaining a comparable particle density.
