Environmental impacts of phosphorus recovery through struvite precipitation in wastewater treatment

Madeline Sena et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment focuses on removing phosphorus and nitrogen to prevent eutrophication, but interest has shifted to recovering these nutrients. Struvite precipitation can help control unwanted deposits and produce a valuable fertilizer, but the environmental impacts of recovery methods may not be fully offset by their benefits. A life cycle assessment of a wastewater treatment plant showed overall environmental impacts were similar before and after implementing struvite recovery.

Influence of microwave-assisted pyrolysis parameters and additives on phosphorus speciation and transformation in phosphorus-enriched biochar derived from municipal sewage sludge

Zhenquan Fang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the recovery of phosphorus from municipal sewage sludge using microwave-assisted pyrolysis. The research found that optimal temperature and residence time can efficiently recover phosphorus, while the addition of CaO or CaO and MgCl2 can increase the phosphorus content in phosphorus-enriched biochar.

Contribution of selective bacterial extracellular polymeric substances to the polymorphism and morphologies of formed Ca/Mg carbonates

Chonghong Zhang et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests that bacterial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) play a significant role in the crystal growth and morphological forms of carbonates. Carbohydrates and proteins in EPS were identified as main functional biomacromolecules for carbonate crystal growth, influencing polymorph selection and morphology. EPS from different bacterial strains induced different carbonate minerals with varying compositions and crystal structures.

Phosphate recovery from aqueous solution via struvite crystallization based on electrochemical-decomposition of nature magnesite

Xuewei Li et al.

Summary: The study proposed an electrochemical-decomposition method using natural magnesite to economically supply magnesium for synthesizing struvite and recover phosphate. The results showed that this strategy was effective in recovering phosphate from aqueous solution as struvite, with a potential cost reduction of up to 60% compared to traditional chemical methods.

Tuning microscopic structure of Al-based metal-organic frameworks by changing organic linkers for efficient phosphorus removal

Shengjian Li et al.

Summary: The study synthesized five aluminum-based metal-organic frameworks by changing the organic linker, with Al-BDC showing the highest phosphorus adsorption capacity and Al-PMA showing the lowest. The Al-MOFs are suitable for phosphorus removal from water over a wide pH range and have the potential for removing phosphorus from natural waters. The main phosphorus removal pathways were identified as electrostatic interaction and ligand exchange using the prepared Al-MOFs.

Removal of PAHs at high concentrations in a soil washing solution containing TX-100 via simultaneous sorption and biodegradation processes by immobilized degrading bacteria in PVA-SA hydrogel beads

Weixiao Chen et al.

Summary: The study explored the use of a simultaneous sorption and biodegradation technique to remove organic pollutants from soil washing solution by immobilizing bacteria in hydrogel beads. The findings showed that beads with immobilized bacteria at a medium concentration can remove 77% of PAHs in 96 h, providing a sustainable and efficient method for industrial application.

Nitrogen recovery from pig slurry by struvite precipitation using a low-cost magnesium oxide

S. Astals et al.

Summary: Our research successfully optimized the technology for recovering ammonia nitrogen from pig manure by using a stabilizing agent synthesized from LG-MgO and phosphoric acid. The experimental results showed that the H3PO4/LG-MgO ratio controlled the magnesium phosphate mineral phase of the stabilizing agent.
