Daily intake of heavy metals and minerals in food - A case study of four Danish dietary profiles

Michele Marini et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the daily intake of heavy metals and minerals in different Danish diets, finding a risk of exceeding provisional tolerable daily intake and recommended daily intake. Results emphasize the importance of implementing measures to reduce the risk cycle of HMs threatening environmental health and food safety.

District heating and electricity production based on biogas produced from municipal WWTPs in Turkey: A comprehensive case study

Aysegul Abusoglu et al.

Summary: This paper explores the district heating potentials of wastewater treatment plants based on their biogas, electricity, and heat productions, presenting two district heating scenarios. It is found that waste heat from cogeneration can effectively provide heating services, and the use of biogas can meet the energy needs of more households.

Detoxification of heavy metals attributed to biological and non-biological complexes in soils around copper producing areas throughout China

Juan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the potential health risks associated with heavy metals in soils from typical copper producing areas in China, and the biological and non-biological components in the soil; using prediction models, it was found that the majority of monitored regions posed unacceptable health risks; two possible existing forms for detoxification of heavy metals were revealed, suggesting the need for understanding pollution sources and existing forms of heavy metals to control risks.

Heavy metal uptake by plants from wastewater of different pulp concentrations and contaminated soils

Saeed Shojaei et al.

Summary: This research evaluates the performance of Alhagi and Mallow plant species in absorbing heavy metals around the tailings dam of a copper mine in Iran. The results show that these plants have a high potential for remediation of heavy metal contaminated areas, with higher accumulation in roots compared to aerial parts. Soil mapping demonstrates higher dispersion of cadmium, lead, and manganese compared to chromium.

Identifying dust as the dominant source of exposure to heavy metals for residents around battery factories in the Battery Industrial Capital of China

Mohai Shen et al.

Summary: The study identified exposure pathways of residents to heavy metals, with higher levels observed in males than females and decreasing levels with age. Oral ingestion and dermal exposure via dust were found to be the main pathways of exposure for residents, especially children who should be prioritized for protection.

Evaluation of the Potential Health Risk Related to the Use of an Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant Sludge as Manure

E. Isil Arslan Topal

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations of five heavy metals in sludge from an Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant in Turkey, and calculated the associated health risks of using the sludge as manure. The metal pollution index (MPI) was used to assess the pollution degree, revealing varying concentrations and risks of heavy metals across different seasons, but overall no non-carcinogenic or carcinogenic risks were found associated with using the sludge as manure.
