Current density distribution in air-breathing microfluidic fuel cells with an array of graphite rod anodes

Summary: This study investigates the current density distribution in air-breathing microfluidic fuel cells with an array of graphite rod anodes under different acidic and alkaline conditions. Results show that the performance of the cell is better under alkaline media compared to acidic media, with various current density distributions observed. In acidic media, two-layer anodes far from the cathode exhibit higher current densities at lower current densities, while the reverse occurs at higher current densities. In contrast, under alkaline conditions, the two-layer anodes far from the cathode are consistently the main contributor to the total current density.

Summary: A novel air-breathing microfluidic fuel cell with discrete-holes film fueling anode was developed in this study, introducing the concept of gas film cooling to enhance fuel transfer efficiency. The visualization and verification of annular film flow based on film fueling were conducted using fluorescence microscopy under various flow conditions. The research results provide valuable insights for promoting the practical application of microfluidic fuel cells.

Innovation of vapor-feed microfluidic fuel cell with novel geometric configuration and operation parameters optimization

Summary: This study introduces a self-pumping membraneless microfluidic fuel cell utilizing carbon cloth electrodes and Na2SO4-imbibed polyacrylamide gel as the ion-transport medium. The flow of fuel and oxidant is driven by capillary force without the need for external pumps, achieving a peak power density of 8.9 mW cm(-2).

Direct Formate/Persulfate Microfluidic Fuel Cell with a Catalyst-Free Cathode and High Power Density

Summary: A direct formate microfluidic fuel cell (DFMFC) with a catalyst-free cathode and sodium persulfate as the oxidant has been proposed to achieve high performance at low cost. By optimizing the flow rate and concentration of the reactants, the DFMFC achieved a high peak power density and current density, while maintaining stable operation during constant voltage discharge. This study demonstrates that a catalyst-free cathode with persulfate as the oxidant is a feasible approach to simultaneously achieve superior cell performance and low cost for microfluidic fuel cells.

Energy generation by membraneless microfluidic fuel cell using acidic wastewater as a fuel
