Enhanced light harvesting and photocurrent generation activities of biohybrid light-harvesting 1-reaction center core complexes (LH1-RCs) from Rhodopseudomonas palustris

Genki Kasagi et al.

Summary: The study showed that connecting external light harvesting fluorophores can enhance the maximum yield of charge separation and photocurrent generation activity. The rate of EET increases with the spectral overlap between the emission bands of the fluorophores and the absorption band of B875. Therefore, the number and location of fluorophores attached to LH1-RC have significant effects on light harvesting activity.

Enhancement of the Photocurrent of a Single Photosystem I Complex by the Localized Plasmon of a Gold Nanorod

Ryotaro Furuya et al.

Summary: By combining conductive atomic force microscopy (AFM) and confocal fluorescence microscopy, researchers measured photocurrents passing through single trimeric photosystem I (PSI) complexes near single gold nanorods (AuNRs). The study revealed that localized plasmons can enhance photocurrents and provided deeper insight into molecular mechanisms of plasmon-enhanced phenomena.

Bespoke Biomolecular Wires for Transmembrane Electron Transfer: Spontaneous Assembly of a Functionalized Multiheme Electron Conduit

Samuel E. H. Piper et al.

Summary: Shewanella oneidensis is capable of exchanging electrons between cellular metabolism and external redox partners, with the outer membrane spanning MTR complex playing a critical role. Research demonstrates the tight and spontaneous association of MtrAB with MtrC, showing potential for building bespoke electron conduits.
