From point particles to body points

Antonio DiCarlo et al.

Summary: Given a spacetime background, a material system in motion can be modeled discretely as point masses or continuously as a deformable body. The discrete and continuous descriptions can be unified through a coarsening procedure. In kinematics, four bottom-up procedures can be used to derive a macroscopic velocity field from a microscopic one. Introducing mesoscopic scales of space and time is crucial for this. Regardless of the coarsening procedure, the continuous description of the system's motion carries intrinsic physical information and can be persistently labeled as body points.

Onsager principle in polymer dynamics

Masao Doi

Summary: The Onsager principle, proposed by Lars Onsager in 1931, is a variational principle important in describing the dynamics of polymer and soft matter systems. Derived kinetic equations from this principle are commonly used, and it can also provide approximate solutions due to its minimization nature. Examples from capillary hydrodynamics, gel dynamics, and flow of viscoelastic fluids are often used to illustrate its applications.

Electric-field-based Poisson-Boltzmann theory: Treating mobile charge as polarization

Michiel Sprik

Summary: The text discusses how mobile charge in an electrolytic solution can be represented by ionic polarization and extended to a dielectric body. It explores the use of Poisson-Boltzmann functional and Ericksen's variational procedure to derive equilibrium equations for electric potential and ion concentration, as well as how transverse polarization is incorporated into the model.
