Electrostatically Tuning the Photodissociation of the Irgacure 2959 Photoinitiator in the Gas Phase by Cation Binding

Samuel J. P. Marlton et al.

Summary: In this study, the low-lying electronic states of the Norrish-type I photoinitiator Irgacure 2959 complexed with a single metal cation were investigated using photodissociation action spectroscopy in the gas phase. The charge of the cations was found to influence the key electronic energy levels, leading to shifts in the electronic states. The oriented electric field generated by the cation affects the energy gap between different electronic states, ultimately impacting the yield of radical photoproducts.

Laser Photodissociation Action Spectroscopy for the Wavelength-Dependent Evaluation of Photoligation Reactions

David L. Marshall et al.

Summary: The nitrile imine-mediated tetrazole-ene cycloaddition reaction requires detailed knowledge of the tetrazole photoactivation profile for optimizing the outcome. Photodissociation action spectroscopy (PDAS) can quickly assess the wavelength dependence of product formation and photodissociation profile, enabling faster design and synthesis of next-generation substrates. The red-shifted onset of nitrile imine formation with a novel N-ethylcarbazole derivative demonstrates that PDAS is a powerful tool for screening new substrates in pursuit of efficient visible light-triggered ligation for biological applications.
