Insight into decomposition of formic acid to syngas required for Rh-catalyzed hydroformylation of olefins

Lei Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the behavior of formic acid (FA) in releasing H-2 and CO was carefully investigated, leading to the development of a new hydroformylation protocol without the need for syngas. The use of FA as a syngas source suppressed side reactions and enabled insight into the catalytic mechanism through spectroscopic analysis. This research provides a promising alternative for olefin hydroformylation with potential environmental benefits.

Efficient Syntheses of Biobased Terephthalic Acid, p-Toluic Acid, and p-Methylacetophenone via One-Pot Catalytic Aerobic Oxidation of Monoterpene Derived Bio-p-cymene

Joshua D. Tibbetts et al.

Summary: An efficient elevated-pressure catalytic oxidative process has been developed for the oxidation of p-cymene into terephthalic acid with a yield of around 70%. The mixed Co2+/Mn2+ catalytic system allows for high yields of terephthalic acid at relatively low reaction temperatures in short reaction times. The use of different catalytic systems can result in the partial oxidation of p-cymene into different products under varying conditions.

Access to α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids through water-soluble palladium catalyzed hydroxycarbonylation of alkynes using water as the solvent

Jinhe Lv et al.

Summary: A palladium-catalyzed synthesis of alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acids from alkynes with CO and H2O was described using a modified sulfoxantphos ligand. The water-soluble palladium catalyst allowed for easy separation and reuse for 5 cycles, with good to excellent yields of the corresponding carboxylic acids achieved through atom-economic hydroxycarbonylation of various symmetrical and unsymmetrical alkynes.
