Modeling Phylogenetic Biome Shifts on a Planet with a Past

Michael Landis et al.

Summary: The spatial distribution of biomes has changed considerably over time, affecting the opportunities for evolutionary lineages to shift between different biomes. A phylogenetic biome shift model was developed to study how lineages shift between biomes and regions, with results suggesting a warm temperate or tropical origin for a specific plant genus. The model highlights the importance of considering dynamic geographical opportunities in inferring ancestral biomes compatible with Earth's history.

The phylogenetic diversity and structure of the seasonally dry forests in the Neotropics

Axel Arango et al.

Summary: The study investigates the reverse latitudinal species richness gradient of the Neotropical seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTF), finding an increase in phylogenetic diversity away from the Equator, likely driven by species richness. The phylogenetic structure of SDTF assemblages showed spatial patterning, with significant phylogenetic clustering in certain regions like Mesoamerica and Caatinga. The findings suggest that the phylogenetic history influenced the diversity patterns differently across the Neotropics, with no relationship to climatic stability since the Last Glacial Maximum.

Ecological niche differentiation in Chiroxiphia and Antilophia manakins (Aves: Pipridae)

Mariana Villegas et al.

Summary: The study used species distribution models to investigate the niche conservatism of manakins, revealing high niche overlap between C. boliviana and C. caudata, but low overlap with other taxa. A negative relationship between niche overlap and phylogenetic distance suggests increasing ecological differentiation over evolutionary time. Results provide insights into the evolution of C. boliviana, proposing that ecological selection may have influenced its speciation.

Biogeography of succulent spurges from Brazilian Seasonally Dry Tropical Forest (SDTF)

Fernanda Hurbath et al.

Summary: This study found that the succulent spurge group Euphorbia sect. Brasilienses in eastern Brazil's SDTF originated in the Miocene, with its sister group Stachydium diverging around 7.7 million years ago and Brasilienses beginning to diversify around 3.1 million years ago. The ancestral range of the clade Stachydium + Brasilienses included the Andes and eastern Brazil's SDTF, indicating connections between western and eastern South America. The ancestral range of clade Brasilienses was limited to eastern Brazil's SDTF, showing limited dispersal abilities and niche conservatisms.

The importance of environmental conditions in maintaining lineage identity in Epithelantha (Cactaceae)

David Aquino et al.

Summary: The use of environmental variables to explain lineage evolution has become increasingly important in recent studies, aiding in species recognition by adding more character information. This study identifies significant phylogenetic signals for Epithelantha in soil pH, isothermality, temperature seasonality, and annual precipitation, with soil type and landforms acting as ecological barriers maintaining species identity. This highlights the influence of soil-related variables on Epithelantha evolution and possibly other genera within the Cactaceae family.

The effect of single biome occupancy on the estimation of biome shifts and the detection of biome conservatism

Esther E. Dale et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that using a single-biome-per-species approach results in significantly lower biome shift rates, impacting the assessment of biome conservatism. In New Zealand plant lineages, estimated biome shifts were also significantly lower when analysed under the assumption of a single biome per species. It is suggested that analyses allowing species to occupy multiple biomes may provide a more accurate assessment of biome shift rates and biome conservatism testing.
