Antioxidant Enzymatic Activity and Osmotic Adjustment as Components of the Drought Tolerance Mechanism in Carex duriuscula

Summary: This study found that Carex duriuscula is able to survive in arid environments due to efficient operation of its ROS-scavenging systems and osmotic adjustment mechanisms. Drought stress caused reduction in leaf water content and chlorophyll content, accompanied by an increase in hydrogen peroxide and superoxide contents in both leaves and roots. Under mild and severe drought conditions, C. duriuscula increased uptake of K+, Na+, and Cl- by roots, resulting in increased concentrations of these ions in leaves and roots.
