Loss circulation prevention in geothermal drilling by shape memory polymer

Musaab Magzoub et al.

Summary: Geothermal formations are naturally fractured with large openings, leading to frequent drilling fluid loss. Developing smarter technologies to tackle lost circulation is vital for cost reduction in geothermal drilling. Shape memory polymers can efficiently seal fractures, reduce fluid loss, and strengthen wellbores in high-temperature drilling operations.

On the application of silica gel for mitigating CO2 leakage in CCS projects: Rheological properties and chemical stability

Sobhan Hatami et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of varying chemical compositions on the formation, viscosity, and stability of silica sol gels. It found that factors such as concentrations of SiO2, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, and pH levels all play a role in gelation times, with complex interplay between these variables influencing the process. Additionally, empirical fits were obtained to describe the gelation times and precursor sol viscosities, showing good agreement between experimental measurements and models for predicting gelation rates in real-world applications.

Prediction and control model of shale induced fracture leakage pressure

Xiaopeng Zhai et al.

Summary: During the drilling of shale gas reservoirs, fractures gradually open under fluid pressure due to the existence of natural fractures in the shale, leading to leakage. The current leakage pressure model cannot analyze the influence of fracture width change on leakage pressure, so a calculation method is established to control such leakage.

The shear stability mechanism of cyclodextrin polymer and amphiphilic polymer inclusion gels

Bobo Zhou et al.

Summary: The study introduces CADC inclusion gel, which improves the shear stability of the gel by reorganizing amphiphilic polymer with cyclodextrin structure. The inclusion gel solves the issue of poor shear resistance ability of amphiphilic polymer gel and has the potential to replace it for water shutoff applications in oilfield.

Study of materials to combat loss of circulation in fractures and static filtration

Andreia Silveira Freire Soares et al.

Summary: In this study, drilling fluid formulations were developed using a four-level factorial design to evaluate the effect of drilling fluid components on their rheological properties and in the loss of circulation. The incorporation of LCMs improved the rheological properties of the drilling fluid, with CMC, BT, and HG being the main factors in combating loss of circulation in the fracture and filtration phases. Additionally, the interaction of HG*CMC and BT*CMC was found to be highly significant in preventing loss of circulation.
