Nonuniform loss of muscle strength and atrophy during bed rest: a systematic review

Uros Marusic et al.

Summary: This study found a logarithmic decline in muscle strength and atrophy in the knee extensor muscles during prolonged bed rest, with the fastest decline occurring in the early stages. Muscle strength declined faster than muscle atrophy in the first two weeks, with the ratio decreasing over time. Positive regression analysis suggested that most of the muscle strength loss could be explained by muscle atrophy, with the remaining attributed to other factors such as mechanical properties and neuromuscular changes.

Leucine augments specific skeletal muscle mitochondrial respiratory pathways during recovery following 7 days of physical inactivity in older adults

Emily J. Arentson-Lantz et al.

Summary: Leucine supplementation in older adults helps preserve mitochondrial function and muscle oxidative capacity during periods of disuse and rehabilitation. It mitigates the loss of insulin sensitivity associated with muscular disuse and increases mitochondrial respiration while reducing oxidative stress markers after periods of disuse and rehabilitation.

Examining sex differences in sitting-induced microvascular dysfunction: Insight from acute vitamin C supplementation

Kevin P. Decker et al.

Summary: Prolonged sitting leads to a reduction in leg microvascular function independent of sex, but acute antioxidant supplementation with Vitamin C (VC) only attenuates this decrease in young males and not in young females. Young females show significant variability in response to VC supplementation in terms of changes in microvascular function induced by prolonged sitting, unrelated to potential contributors like lower limb venous pooling or reduced arterial shear rate.

Passive muscle heating attenuates the decline in vascular function caused by limb disuse

Determining the contributions of protein synthesis and breakdown to muscle atrophy requires non-steady-state equations

Kamil A. Kobak et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the importance of accounting for a change in protein mass during D2O labelling studies, while also exploring the contribution of protein synthesis and breakdown to denervation-induced muscle atrophy. Conflicting results were found between steady- and non-steady-state calculations on myofibrillar protein synthesis and breakdown during periods of muscle loss. Additionally, collagen accumulation was largely from a decrease in collagen breakdown during denervation.
