Building the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance network in veterinary medicine (EARS-Vet)

Rodolphe Mader et al.

Summary: Establishing the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance network in Veterinary medicine (EARS-Vet) is proposed to fill the gap in current AMR surveillance efforts, provide useful information for policymakers and veterinary practitioners, and support antimicrobial stewardship in animal health. Strong political commitment at national and EU/EEA levels is required for the success of EARS-Vet.

A proposed scheme for the monitoring of antibiotic resistance in veterinary pathogens of food animals in the UK

Christopher Teale et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the monitoring programs for antibiotic resistance in food-producing animals in the EU and the absence of a pan-European statutory monitoring program for veterinary bacterial pathogens. Recommendations are made for monitoring the susceptibility of key veterinary pathogens using harmonized panels of antibiotics. The selected antibiotics and their dilution ranges are presented for implementation in the UK in 2020.
