A meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies for average daily gain and lean meat percentage in two Duroc pig populations

Shenping Zhou et al.

Summary: This study utilized GWAS and meta-analysis to investigate the genetic architecture of ADG and LMP traits in pigs, identifying novel QTLs and candidate genes associated with these traits. The combination of single-population and meta-analysis of GWAS improved the efficiency of detecting additional SNPs for the analyzed traits. The results provide new insights into the genetic basis of ADG and LMP in pigs and suggest potential markers for marker-assisted selection in pig breeding.

Genome-wide detection of CNV regions and their potential association with growth and fatness traits in Duroc pigs

Yibin Qiu et al.

Summary: This study provides a necessary supplement to the CNV map of the Duroc genome through large-scale population genotyping. The CNVR-based GWAS results offer a meaningful way to elucidate the genetic mechanisms underlying complex traits and the identified CNVRs can be used as molecular markers for genetic improvement in the molecular-guided breeding of modern commercial pigs.

Genetic architecture and major genes for backfat thickness in pig lines of diverse genetic backgrounds

Miguel Gozalo-Marcilla et al.

Summary: This study conducted a large genome-wide association study for backfat thickness using data from eight lines of diverse genetic backgrounds and identified 264 significant SNP associations across 27 genomic regions. The results confirm the polygenic architecture of backfat thickness and highlight the role of genes involved in energy homeostasis, adipogenesis, fatty acid metabolism, and insulin signalling pathways in fat deposition in pigs. Additionally, several less well-understood metabolic pathways were found to contribute to backfat development, such as those related to phosphate, calcium, and vitamin D homeostasis.

Infertility due to defective sperm flagella caused by an intronic deletion in DNAH17 that perturbs splicing

Adela Noskova et al.

Summary: A novel recessive sperm tail defect associated with a 13-bp deletion in the DNAH17 gene was discovered in Swiss Large White boars, leading to multiple morphological abnormalities of sperm flagella. Direct gene testing and transcriptome analysis can now be utilized to monitor and prevent the frequent occurrence of this sperm tail disorder in breeding boars.
