Exploiting within-breed variability in the autochthonous Reggiana breed identified several candidate genes affecting pigmentation-related traits, stature and udder defects in cattle

S. Bovo et al.

Summary: Autochthonous cattle breeds, like the Reggiana, are reservoirs of genetic diversity. The intensity of red coat color and muzzle color in Reggiana cattle is mainly controlled by specific genetic factors, while piebaldism is associated with genes related to spotted patterns. Stature and teat defects in this breed are also linked to specific genetic markers. This study not only provides valuable information for selection in Reggiana cattle, but also sheds light on the genetic mechanisms behind certain exterior traits in cattle.
