Elucidation of the macromolecular composition of fossil biopolymers using Py-GCxGC-TOFMS

Raman Umamaheswaran et al.

Summary: In this paper, the authors compare the effectiveness of Py-GCxGC-TOFMS with conventional Py-GC-MS techniques in analyzing fossil organic materials. They find that Py-GCxGC-TOFMS offers higher compound separation, detection of more complex compounds, and is more suitable for samples with a larger variety of chemical structures and functional groups. This method provides better characterization of kerogen chemistry, aiding in assessments of hydrocarbon source properties and potentially opening up new avenues for interpretation in paleobiological studies.

Using laser micropyrolysis to assess potential relationships between Cambrian tommotiids and organophosphatic brachiopods

Bronwyn L. Teece et al.

Summary: The study utilized laser micropyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to analyze Cambrian tommotiids and organophosphatic brachiopods, revealing A. toddense to be more complex chemically than the two tommotiid taxa, while M. etheridgei is compositionally more similar to A. toddense. This research demonstrates the geochemical significance of using laser micropyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry on Cambrian small shelly fossils.
