Fluid catalytic co-processing of bio-oils with petroleum intermediates: Comparison of vapour phase low pressure hydrotreating and catalytic cracking as pretreatment

Andreas Eschenbacher et al.

Summary: This study investigated the blending of two bio-oils obtained from different catalytic treatments of wheat-straw pyrolysis vapors with atmospheric residue, showing the impact of varying levels of basic nitrogen and aromatics on FCC performance. Refinery operators interested in co-processing fossil oils and biomass-derived pyrolysis oils with elevated content of nitrogen and aromatics can benefit from the important information provided in this study.

Characteristics and Evolution of Nitrogen in the Heavy Components of Algae Pyrolysis Bio-Oil

Jun Li et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the characteristics and evolution of nitrogen in heavy components of algae pyrolytic bio-oil, revealing that most heavy NCCs have a molecular weight in the range of 200-400 Da. Different compositions of NCCs were observed in lipid-rich, protein-rich, and carbohydrate-rich samples. As temperature increases, NCCs become more aromatic and contain less oxygen, while heavier NCCs decompose to form lighter compounds with more nitrogen atoms. Ultimately, strategies for high-quality bio-oil production involving NCCs were proposed.

Electrometric bromine number as a suitable method for the quantitative determination of phenols and olefins in hydrotreated pyrolysis bio-oils

Milos Auersvald et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the determination of phenols and cyclic olefins in bio-oils, finding a feasible method through analysis of 140 oxygenates and optimization of chromatographic separation. A good correlation between phenols and oxygen content was discovered, providing a reliable way to quantify these compounds in hydrotreated bio-oils.

A perspective on catalytic hydropyrolysis of biomass

Magnus Zingler Stummann et al.

Summary: Catalytic hydropyrolysis has shown promise as a method for producing liquid hydrocarbon fuels from lignocellulosic biomass, but there is still limited research in this field and the process remains not well-understood. Through analysis of literature and laboratory research, a mechanistic model for catalytic hydropyrolysis of biomass has been proposed, along with discussions on the influence of hydrogenation catalyst on product distribution and catalyst deactivation. Comparisons with other pyrolysis technologies have been made, highlighting and discussing the challenges for catalytic hydropyrolysis.
