Cattail fiber-derived hierarchical porous carbon materials for high-performance supercapacitors

Ge-Ge Song et al.

Summary: In this work, porous carbon derived from cattail fibers was prepared with K2CO3 as the activating agent using an impregnation-single stage calcination method. The optimal CPC-2-600 exhibited larger specific surface area and more abundant pores, leading to improved supercapacitive behavior. The mild, effective and low-cost fabrication strategy is also suitable for preparing other biomass-based carbons with promising applications in various fields.

Summary: Porous carbon materials were fabricated using a hydrothermal precarbonisation-calcination strategy with SDS as the dispersant and ZnCl2 as the activation agent, resulting in a hierarchical porous structure with a large specific surface area and total pore volume. The optimized sample, SAGC-1-4, showed enhanced supercapacitive performance with high specific capacitance and excellent rate performance in a symmetric supercapacitor configuration.

Hierarchically porous carbon derived from potassium-citrate-loaded poplar catkin for high performance supercapacitors

Xiaodong Luo et al.

Summary: A simple one-step method for preparing biomass derived carbon materials with hierarchical pore structure for supercapacitor application is proposed. The carbon materials exhibit interconnected carbon networks with macropores, small mesopores and micropores, and different temperature carbonization results in varying properties such as surface area and electrical conductivity. The electrodes based on these carbon materials show high specific capacity and stability, with S-850 sample displaying superior specific capacity at low charge-discharge current density and S-900 electrode showing high specific capacity under high current density. The symmetrical devices based on S-850 demonstrate superb stability and high energy and power densities in alkaline electrolyte.

Engineered hierarchical porous carbons for supercapacitor applications through chemical pretreatment and activation of biomass precursors

Gunes A. Yakaboylu et al.

Summary: The study examined the impact of chemical pretreatment time on the activated carbons derived from Miscanthus grass biomass. By controlling the pretreatment duration, the microstructure, chemistry, and active functional groups were adjusted, leading to improved electrochemical performance of the activated carbons. The optimal KOH pretreatment resulted in high specific capacitance, cycling stability, specific energy, and specific power, highlighting the importance of pore volume, cellulose content, C/O ratio, and surface chemistry on the electrochemical performance.
