Social and psychosocial effects on atopic eczema symptom severity - a scoping review of observational studies published from 1989 to 2019

K. Zeiser et al.

Summary: Social and psychosocial factors can affect the severity of atopic eczema, with stress exacerbating symptoms and depression associated with severity. Coping strategies may mediate the impact of stress on symptoms, while other factors such as illness identity, anger, frustration, and psychosomatic states also play a role. Future research is needed to further investigate the interactions between these factors and the course of atopic eczema.

Association Between Atopic Dermatitis and Educational Attainment in Denmark

Sigrun Alba Johannesdottir Schmidt et al.

Summary: This cohort study in Denmark found an association between hospital-diagnosed AD and reduced educational attainment, although the clinical importance was uncertain due to small absolute differences and possible confounding by familial factors. Future research should explore replicability in other populations and variations by AD phenotype.

Association of Atopic Dermatitis Severity With Learning Disability in Children

Joy Wan et al.

Summary: This cross-sectional study found that worse AD severity was associated with greater odds of reported LD, independent of socioeconomic characteristics, AD onset age, and other related disorders. Additional prospective and mechanistic studies are needed to clarify the association of AD with learning difficulties, and it is suggested that children with more severe AD should be screened for learning difficulties to initiate appropriate interventions.

Association of Wildfire Air Pollution and Health Care Use for Atopic Dermatitis and Itch

Raj P. Fadadu et al.

Summary: This study found that short-term exposure to air pollution from wildfires was associated with increased healthcare use for patients with AD and itch, providing a better understanding of the association between poor air quality and skin health and guiding healthcare professionals in counseling patients with skin diseases and public health practices.

Chemical Exposures via Personal Care Products and the Disproportionate Asthma Burden Among the US Black Population

Erika Raley et al.

Summary: The evolving literature suggests a link between chemicals in personal care products and increased risk of asthma, with Black individuals being more exposed to these chemicals, potentially contributing to the disproportionate asthma prevalence among the US Black population. Efforts to reduce chemical exposures through personal care products may help in reducing this disparity.

Childhood atopic dermatitis is associated with cognitive dysfunction A National Health Interview Survey study from 2008 to 2018

Summary: The study identified a significant positive association between childhood atopic dermatitis (AD) and cognitive dysfunction, including memory impairment, developmental delays, and attention deficit. Furthermore, it was found that childhood atopic disease increased the prevalence of developmental delays in boys but not in girls.
