Microwave-assisted phosphorylation of organosolv lignin: new bio-additives for improvement of epoxy resins performance

Sara J. Marciano et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of acetosolv coconut shell lignin (ACSL) and phosphorylated acetosolv coconut shell lignin (P-ACSL) as bio-additives in epoxy resins on their thermal and UV-blocking properties. The results showed that both lignins significantly enhance the thermal and thermo-oxidative stabilities of the thermosetting materials, as well as slightly increase their glass transition temperatures (T-g). Furthermore, ACSL and P-ACSL exhibited excellent UV stabilization properties.

Effect of alkali treatment and coupling agent on thermal and mechanical properties of Opuntia ficus-indica cladodes fibers reinforced HDPE composites

Anass Ait Benhamou et al.

Summary: In this study, Opuntia ficus-indica fibers were used as natural reinforcement in high-density polyethylene matrix, with alkali treatment and use of coupling agent SEBS-g-MA to improve interfacial adhesion. The alkali treatment was found to enhance hardness and Young's modulus properties, while the coupling agent increased plasticity and thermal stability of the composites.

Oxidized demethylated lignin as a bio-based adhesive for wood bonding

Xinyi Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, lignin was modified into a bio-based wood adhesive through demethylation and periodate oxidation, with the resulting adhesive characterized using various analytical methods. It was found that the addition of oxidant improved the bonding performance of lignin-based adhesives, with the optimal formulation being a 20% addition of NaIO4.

Experimental and theoretical investigations of lignin-urea-formaldehyde wood adhesive: Density functional theory analysis

Abdelghani Boussetta et al.

Summary: This study aims to optimize the process of extracting lignin from sugar industry by-products to improve the performance of wood adhesives. The results showed that alkali treatment can effectively isolate lignin, and the addition of lignin in different ratios can reduce formaldehyde emissions. Moreover, theoretical calculations using density functional theory validated the characteristics of different lignin molecules.

Investigating the characteristics of cactus seeds by-product and their use as a new filler in phenol formaldehyde wood adhesive

Anass Ait Benhamou et al.

Summary: In this study, cactus waste seeds were found to be a viable alternative for phenol formaldehyde adhesives due to their higher cellulose content, crystallinity, and thermal stability. Plywood panels bonded with 10% cactus waste seeds showed improved mechanical performance and lower formaldehyde emission levels compared to control phenol formaldehyde resin.

Characterization of Organosolv Birch Lignins: Toward Application-Specific Lignin Production

Petter Paulsen Thoresen et al.

Summary: The extraction of lignin from silver birch under varying process conditions results in lignins with characteristic bonding motifs. High ethanol content extraction generates low molecular weight lignins suitable for producing free phenolics, while higher acid catalyst content leads to oxidation of side chains and the potential production of lignins with various applications. Increasing the acid catalyst content generates lignin with potential applications such as antioxidants, carbon fiber, nanoparticles, and water remediation.

Extraction, characterization and chemical functionalization of phosphorylated cellulose derivatives from Giant Reed Plant

Anass Ait Benhamou et al.

Summary: In this study, cellulose microfibers and cellulose nanocrystals with phosphoric groups on their surfaces were prepared by phosphorylation of cellulose extracted from Giant Reed plant. The phosphorylated samples showed differences in charge content and crystallinity depending on the phosphorous agent used. The phosphorylated microfibers and nanocrystals exhibited specific morphologies and thermal properties, suggesting potential new applications.
