Annotating social determinants of health using active learning, and characterizing determinants using neural event extraction

Summary: This study introduces a new corpus with annotations for Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) and a novel active learning framework, which successfully improves the automatic extraction frequency of health risk factors. The event extraction model trained on this corpus demonstrates high performance in extracting substance use status, employment status, and living status type.
