Enhancement of chip breakability of aluminium alloys by controlling the solidification during direct chill casting

Nilam S. Barekar et al.

Summary: The Melt Conditioned Direct-Chill (MC-DC) casting technology enables the production of aluminum billets with uniform microstructure and refinement of secondary phases, leading to improved machinability in downstream processing. This method combines conventional direct chill casting with a high shear device for in situ microstructural control, resulting in fine equiaxed dendritic grains and uniform distribution of second phase particles. The benefits include increased heat extraction rate, larger temperature gradient at the solidification front, and shallower sump, which contribute to the desired microstructural features.

In-situ microstructural control of A6082 alloy to modify second phase particles by melt conditioned direct chill (MC-DC) casting process - A novel approach

K. M. Sree Manu et al.

Summary: The study introduced a novel strategy to control the formation of noncompact second phase particles in the DC casting of aluminium alloys, achieving a fine-scale dispersion of particles and grain refinement without the deliberate addition of chemical grain refiners. In-situ melt conditioning was used to precisely tailor the as-cast microstructure by maintaining a specific thermal condition in the sump. The MC-DC casting process showed increased production rate potential and reduced the need for homogenisation practices.
