Analysing the potential to restore the multi-functionality of floodplain systems by considering ecosystem service quality, quantity and trade-offs

Andrea Funk et al.

Summary: River floodplains are important for productivity and biodiversity, with restoration measures aiming to re-establish multi-functionality by evaluating the diversity and quantity of ecosystem services. Results show clear synergies between regulating ecosystem services and cultural ecosystem services, indicating high potential for increasing the overall multi-functionality of the floodplain system through the support of specific services.

Assessing land use and flood management impacts on ecosystem services in a river landscape (Upper Danube, Germany)

Barbara Stammel et al.

Summary: The study assessed the impacts of flood prevention on various ecosystem services and found that the percentage and area of active floodplains have the strongest influence on the total provision of ES. The RESI method proved useful in supporting decision-making in regional planning.

Multiple methods confirm wetland restoration improves ecosystem services

Stephanie A. Tomscha et al.

Summary: Global wetland loss has resulted in reduced biodiversity and ecosystem services. Restoring wetlands on private land can enhance nitrogen and phosphorus retention, soil organic carbon content, water permeability, and native plant species richness, while decreasing plant-available phosphorous. The perception of services was associated with reduced plant-available phosphorous, site age, and size, whereas an increase in plant species richness was not a good indicator of gains in measured, modelled, or perceived services. Private wetland restoration can be successful and beneficial for meeting multiple management and policy objectives.
