Clustering, nano-scale precipitation and strengthening of steels

Zhiping Xiong et al.

Summary: Continuous innovations in design of advanced structural steels play a crucial role in the future progress of manufacturing, automotive and construction industries. Events at nano and atomic scales are essential in controlling steel strength, with strengths of 1-1.5 GPa realized in nano-scale precipitation strengthened steels. Modern characterization techniques allow for insight into mechanisms of solute atoms clustering, nano-precipitate formation, and interactions with dislocations contributing to strength.

Superior High-Temperature Strength in a Supersaturated Refractory High-Entropy Alloy

Rui Feng et al.

Summary: High-entropy alloys show promising applications at high temperatures and a single-phase alloy with high-temperature strength can be designed based on intrinsic material characteristics. The high-temperature strength retention is attributed to mechanisms such as large atomic-size and elastic-modulus mismatches, insensitive temperature dependence of elastic constants, and dominance of non-screw character dislocations caused by strong solute pinning.

Summary: Research in high-entropy alloys has been booming since the 2010s, focusing on the vast potential in compositions, microstructures, and properties. Efforts are mainly directed towards exploring the compositional space and microstructures, as well as understanding the mechanical behavior. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive studies on the mechanical behavior of high-entropy alloys.

Shear punching of a Co20Cr20Fe20Ni20Mn15Cu5 high entropy alloy

Keyan Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigated the deformation and fracture behaviors of Co20Cr20Fe20Ni20Mn15Cu5 high entropy alloy plates in shear punching tests. It was found that with the increase of relative clearance, the percentages of deformation zone height and burr zone height also increased, attributed to changes in stress states during the shearing process. A larger relative clearance facilitated more plastic deformation, resulting in numerous slip bands and elongated dimples on the fractured surface.

Plasticity-induced stacking fault behaviors of γ′ precipitates in novel CoNi-based superalloys

W. -W. Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of Ni and Al/W on the plastic deformation mechanism of gamma' precipitates in Co-based superalloys using first principles. The results show that alloying Ni and adjusting Al/W significantly alter dislocation glide and twinning nucleation, with excessive addition of Ni or W deteriorating strength. The ratio of effective planar fault energy plays a crucial role in bridging energy barriers and deformation mechanisms in superalloys at elevated temperatures.

The influence of alloying on the stacking fault energy of gold from density functional theory calculations

Anuj Goyal et al.

Summary: The SFE energy curves of pure gold and its binary alloys with transition metals are determined from DFT, showing the influence of alloying elements on SFE. Different calculation methods yield different results for SFE. The introduction of alloy elements decreases the intrinsic SFE of gold, but SFE is strongly influenced by the distance and concentration of the alloying elements.

Stacking fault energy in concentrated alloys

Mulaine Shih et al.

Summary: This study revisits the meaning of stacking fault energy (SFE) and the assumptions of equilibrium dissociation of lattice dislocations in concentrated alloys, showing that SFE in pure metals is a unique value, but in alloys it has a distribution of values depending on the local atomic environment. By using atomistic simulations in a model NiCo alloy, researchers found that even the upper bound of SFE distribution alone cannot satisfy the force balance in some cases, indicating the key importance of the dislocation/solute interaction for the accurate assessment of SFE in alloys beyond dilute limit.

Summary: The study investigates the temperature effects on the microstructural evolution of a coarse-grained Al5083 alloy during equal channel angular pressing (ECAP). It was found that with an increase in the number of passes, grain refinement had a positive effect on the alloy's strength. Additionally, increasing the pressing temperature led to a decrease in new grain formation and an increase in normal grain size.

Lean duplex TRIP steel: Role of ferrite in the texture development, plastic anisotropy, martensitic transformation kinetics, and stress partitioning

Peijun Hou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the constitutive micromechanical behavior of transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) stainless steel alloys using advanced techniques. The effects of chemical composition, microstructure, and texture on plastic anisotropy and martensitic transformation kinetics were examined, revealing the critical role of stress partitioning among constituent phases and martensitic phase transformation in determining plastic deformation micromechanics. Additionally, the study showed that the introduction of a load-sharing ferrite phase in cost-effective lean duplex TRIP alloy can reduce tensile residual stress concentration in the martensite phase, potentially improving the formability of high-strength TRIP steels.
