Porous plasticity revisited: Macroscopic and multiscale modeling

Gilles Rousselier

Summary: The paper compares the mechanical behaviors of the GTN model and the Rousselier model, revealing their different performances in strain localization, as well as discussing issues related to void growth and finite element discretization. The GTN model is unable to achieve plane strain localization under certain stress conditions, while the Rousselier model is capable of achieving this goal under all stress conditions.

Misorientation and grain boundary orientation dependent grain boundary response in polycrystalline plasticity

Tuncay Yalcinkaya et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the evolution of intergranular localization and stress concentration in three-dimensional micron-sized specimens through the Gurtin grain boundary model incorporated into a three-dimensional higher-order strain gradient crystal plasticity framework. The study addresses continuum scale dislocation-grain boundary interactions in polycrystalline metallic specimens, demonstrating the capabilities of the framework through 3D polycrystalline examples. Detailed grain boundary condition and stress concentration analyses are presented, discussing the advantages and disadvantages of the model with numerical examples.

Crystal cracking of grain-gradient aluminum by a combined CPFEM-CZM method

Li -Ya Liu et al.

Summary: This study combined the crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) and cohesive zone model (CZM) to investigate the cracking mechanism of polycrystalline aluminum with different grain gradient structures under tensile load. The results showed the crack initiation and propagation process of polycrystalline aluminum with different grain-gradient structures, as well as revealing the mechanism of intragrain fracture, GB fracture, and crack transgranular. Additionally, the study found that initial microcracks with different positions, numbers, and angles have a significant influence on the cracking mechanism and effective properties of the material.

Finite element simulation of ductile fracture in polycrystalline materials using a regularized porous crystal plasticity model

Mikhail Khadyko et al.

Summary: The study proposed a regularized model of porous crystal plasticity, which can describe the plastic behavior of materials under various stresses and be applied in a finite element code. Simulation results demonstrate the model's capability to effectively explain the interaction between different modes of strain localization, as well as the initiation and propagation of ductile fracture.

Local micro-mechanical stress conditions leading to pore nucleation during dynamic loading

C. A. Bronkhorst et al.

Summary: Accurately representing porosity-based ductile damage in polycrystalline metallic materials remains a significant challenge, but a soft-coupled linkage technique between a macro-scale damage model and micro-mechanical calculations has shown promise in this study. The micro mechanical model captures non-Schmid effects and suggests significant influences on local stress conditions across grain boundaries and triple junctions within the polycrystalline network.

On the coupling of damage and single crystal plasticity for ductile polycrystalline materials

Bjorn Hakon Frodal et al.

Summary: This study presents a crystal plasticity model that considers the effects of voids or micro-cracks on damage evolution and ductile failure in a single crystal. By simulating the behavior of four different aluminum alloys, the unique properties of each alloy, such as yield strength, work hardening, grain structure, and tensile ductility, are investigated. The capability of the proposed crystal plasticity model is demonstrated through comparison of finite element simulations and experimental tests, showing good agreement between the two and accurate prediction of various shapes of failed specimens.

A mechanism-based multi-trap phase field model for hydrogen assisted fracture

Mehrdad Isfandbod et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel mechanistic approach to predict hydrogen embrittlement, incorporating a multi-physics model that captures the mechanical deformation at crack tips. The analysis demonstrates the framework's capability in accurately capturing sensitivity to hydrogen concentration, loading rate, material strength, and plastic length scale.

Effect of multiple hydrogen embrittlement mechanisms on crack propagation behavior of FCC metals: Competition vs. synergy

Shuang Liang et al.

Summary: Investigations on hydrogen-induced intergranular fracture in different metals were conducted through a multi-scale framework. Results indicated that the dominant hydrogen embrittlement mechanism in different metals depends on the grain boundary type, with twin boundaries exhibiting better resistance to hydrogen embrittlement.
