Effect of rotationally accelerated shot peening on the microstructure and mechanical behavior of a metastable β titanium alloy

Xinkai Ma et al.

Summary: The microstructural evolution and deformation mechanism of a metastable beta alloy processed by rotationally accelerated shot peening were systematically investigated, revealing the formation of different gradient hierarchical microstructures. Novel deformation twinning systems in the martensite were observed during tensile deformation, contributing to hardness and work hardening ability. Introducing a gradient hierarchical microstructure can simultaneously improve the strength and ductility of the metastable beta titanium alloy.

Stress-induced martensitic transformation in a β-solution treated Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al alloy during compressive deformation

Xinkai Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, the compressive deformation behavior of a beta solution treated Ti-1023 alloy was analyzed at room temperature. The results revealed that stress-induced martensitic transformation dominated the compressive deformation process, with different strain rates leading to varying work hardening rates and triggering stresses. Additionally, novel deformation mechanisms of alpha '' martensite, such as {111}(α'') twinning and kinking structure, were observed during the compression deformation.

Revisiting the martensite/ferrite interface damage initiation mechanism: The key role of substructure boundary sliding

L. Liu et al.

Summary: Martensite/ferrite (M/F) interface damage is crucial in controlling failure of dual-phase (DP) steels. The complex hierarchical structure of martensite induces heterogeneous and orientation-dependent plastic response, affecting the behavior of the M/F interface. By considering the substructure and morphology features, this study re-evaluates the M/F interface damage initiation mechanism, showing that substructure boundary sliding can trigger M/F interface damage and control the failure behavior of DP steels.

Crystallography and elastic anisotropy in fatigue crack nucleation at nickel alloy twin boundaries

Xiaoxian Zhang et al.

Summary: Based on investigation of fatigue crack nucleation at annealing twin boundaries (TBs) in polycrystal nickel-based superalloy Rene 88DT, it was found that elastic anisotropy plays a key role in driving local elastic constraint and slip activation, leading to TBs being preferential sites for crack nucleation. The crystallographic orientation of parent grain/twin pair also plays a crucial role in slip activation and fatigue crack nucleation, with the most damaging parent grain orientations identified.

Insight into microstructure-sensitive elastic strain concentrations from integrated computational modeling and digital image correlation

Marat Latypov et al.

Summary: The study reveals that highly localized elastic strain concentrations in polycrystalline microstructures under monotonic loading depend on particular crystallographic and morphological orientations of grains, rather than on crystalline details of their local neighborhood. Annealing twin boundaries with specific topological and crystallographic features may increase the likelihood of slip band initiation throughout the microstructure of polycrystalline Ni-base superalloys.

Accommodation mechanisms in strain-transformable titanium alloys

Y. Danard et al.

Summary: A new beta-metastable Ti-alloy is designed to achieve a large ductility combined with an elevated and stable work-hardening rate, deforming by the formation and multiplication of {332}<113> twins. Stress induced martensite is interpreted as an accommodation mechanism to relax local high strain fields, ensuring a large and stable plastic deformation of this newly designed Ti-alloy.

Low cycle fatigue behavior and deformation mechanism of different microstructures in Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr alloy

Summary: Two different types of microstructures, bimodal and fully lamellar, in a high strength Ti alloy, Ti-5Al-5V5Mo-3Cr, were studied to understand their low cycle fatigue response and plastic deformation sequence among different phases. Transmission electron microscopy revealed deformation micro mechanisms at various strain amplitudes, while crack path-microstructure interaction explained the observed differences in life at low strain amplitudes.

Martensite formation in titanium alloys: Crystallographic and compositional effects

Madeleine Bignon et al.

Summary: The study proposes an explanation for the inhibition of martensite beyond characteristic concentration thresholds in titanium binary alloys, combining the phenomenological theory of martensite crystallography and thermodynamic calculations. It shows that martensite formation can be prevented crystallographically while still being thermodynamically favorable. By considering the influence of composition, two twinning systems and two glide systems are identified to produce the lattice invariant shear, with computed critical concentrations for martensite formation aligning well with experimental results. The method may serve as a guide for designing titanium alloys with controlled martensitic behavior.

Revealing the intrinsic nanohardness of retained austenite grain in a medium Mn steel with heterogeneous structure

B. B. He et al.

Summary: Increasing austenite stability through Mn alloying effectively suppresses martensitic transformation in medium Mn steel, resulting in higher nanohardness for large austenite grains. Despite grain boundary strengthening, the nanohardness of ferrite remains lower than that of austenite grains. The intrinsic nanohardness of austenite found in this study can provide valuable input parameters for modeling high strength steels with retained austenite.
