Safety of intermediate dose of low molecular weight heparin in COVID-19 patients

Massimo Mattioli et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively evaluated the safety of intermediate dose regimens of low-weight molecular heparin in COVID-19 patients. The results suggest that the use of an intermediate dose of LWMH appears to be feasible and safe in COVID-19 patients, without increasing the risk of bleeding or need for blood transfusion. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Unfractionated heparin inhibits live wild type SARS-CoV-2 cell infectivity at therapeutically relevant concentrations

Julia A. Tree et al.

Summary: A comparison of clinically relevant heparins showed that unfractionated heparin (UFH) has significantly stronger antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 compared to low molecular weight heparins (LMWHs), directly inhibiting the binding of spike protein to the human ACE2 receptor. These findings support further clinical investigation of UFH as a potential treatment for COVID-19 patients.

Chitosan/heparin polyelectrolyte complexes as ion-paring approach to encapsulate heparin in orally administrable SLN: In vitro evaluation

Eleonora Maretti et al.

Summary: This study aims to enhance the oral bioavailability of hydrophilic drugs by encapsulating high molecular weight heparin in Chitosan/Heparin Polyelectrolyte Complexes (PEC) and subsequently in Solid Lipid Nanoparticles (SLN). The hybrid PEC-SLN showed pH-controlled drug release, low toxicity, and rapid internalization in CaCo-2 cells, making them a promising candidate for further in vivo investigations on the systemic bioavailability of oral heparin.

Preparation and Evaluation of a Self-Nanoemulsifying Drug Delivery System Loaded with Heparin Phospholipid Complex

Xiao-Lei Qiu et al.

Summary: A self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (SNEDDS) was developed to enhance the absorption of heparin after oral administration, where heparin was compounded with phospholipids to achieve better fat solubility in the form of heparin-phospholipid (HEP-Pc) complex. The successful preparation of HEP-Pc complex and characterization of heparin lipid microemulsion (HEP-LM) suggest great potential for an oral heparin formulation.
