Reamer Irrigator Aspirator Versus Iliac Crest Bone Grafting and Proximal Tibial Curettage: Is There a Difference in Blood Loss and Transfusion Rates?

Anthony Martella et al.

Summary: This study compared blood loss and transfusion rates among reamer irrigator aspirator (RIA), iliac crest bone graft (ICBG), and proximal tibial curettage (PTC) for autograft harvest. The results showed that the RIA group had significantly higher blood loss and transfusion rates compared to the ICBG and PTC groups. Additionally, the RIA group obtained a larger amount of graft and had longer operative times.

Strategies for Bone Regeneration: From Graft to Tissue Engineering

Giulia Battafarano et al.

Summary: Bone is a regenerative organ with self-renewal ability, but impaired bone healing may require medical intervention using natural or synthetic bone grafts for regeneration. Tissue engineering relies on the combination of cells, growth factors, and scaffold materials, with various materials and cell types being investigated for bone regeneration strategies.

A novel nano-hydroxyapatite/synthetic polymer/bone morphogenetic protein-2 composite for efficient bone regeneration

Zeynep Bal et al.

Summary: The novel composite material of nHAp/PLA-PEG demonstrated efficient bone regeneration with low-dose BMP-2. ELISA results showed sustained release of BMP-2 up to day 21, with 91.6% of specimens in both the low- and high-dose groups achieving solid fusion according to μCT and manual palpation test, while none in the control group achieved bony fusion.

Preliminary Results of the Capasquelet Technique for Managing Femoral Bone Defects-Combining a Masquelet Induced Membrane and Capanna Vascularized Fibula with an Allograft

Alexis Combal et al.

Summary: The Capasquelet surgery showed satisfactory bone consolidation and early weight-bearing, with the induced membrane potentially playing a role in osteoinduction of the graft. Further studies with larger cohorts and longer follow-up periods are needed to better assess the implications of this two-stage reconstruction technique.

Postoperative Morbidity and Complications in Elderly Patients after Harvesting of Iliac Crest Bone Grafts

Marie Sophie Katz et al.

Summary: Harvesting bone grafts from the anterior iliac crest for intraoral augmentation is safe for both young and elderly patients. Postoperative morbidity, such as gait disturbances or delayed wound healing at the donor site, is low with short duration. However, the volume of the bone graft is associated with a longer hospital stay, which should be considered in surgical planning.
