Wheat transcriptome profiling reveals abscisic and gibberellic acid treatments regulate early-stage phytohormone defense signaling, cell wall fortification, and metabolic switches following Fusarium graminearum-challenge

Leann M. Buhrow et al.

Summary: Treatment of wheat with ABA, AS6, or GA in the presence or absence of Fusarium graminearum resulted in 9689 wheat genes related to Fg, showing changes in defense responses, cell metabolism, transport, and lipid metabolism. ABA and GA crosstalk was dysregulated, with Fg + ABA up-regulating phytohormone biosynthesis and signaling, while Fg + GA mainly suppressed these processes. Unexpectedly, Fg + AS6 elicited antagonistic responses related to stress, phytohormone transport, and FHB disease-related genes.

Contribution of phenylpropanoid metabolism to plant development and plant-environment interactions

Nai-Qian Dong et al.

Summary: Phenylpropanoid metabolism is crucial for plant development and interaction with the environment. Plants have evolved multiple branches of this pathway, generating a variety of metabolites. Various factors regulate phenylpropanoid metabolism to maintain homeostasis during plant development and in response to environmental stresses.

Are Demethylation Inhibitor Plus Quinone Outside Inhibitor Fungicide Premixes During Flowering Worthwhile for Fusarium Head Blight Control in Wheat? A Meta-Analysis

Jhonatan Paulo Barro et al.

Summary: Research found in Brazil shows that the use of DMI and QoI fungicide premixes has some effectiveness in controlling Fusarium head blight (FHB) in wheat, but with varying impacts on wheat yields. For economic benefits, it is suggested that when making management choices, more consideration should be given to spraying tebuconazole twice or pyraclostrobin plus metconazole once.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid Disodium Salt Acts as an Antifungal Candidate Molecule against Fusarium graminearum by Inhibiting DON Biosynthesis and Chitin Synthase Activity

Xiu-Shi Song et al.

Summary: Fusarium fungi are responsible for devastating diseases affecting yield and mycotoxin production. Resistance to fungicides has become a global therapeutic challenge, highlighting the need for new control agents. The nonantibiotic drug EDTANa(2) was found to exhibit antifungal activities against Fusarium species and inhibit DON biosynthesis, making it a potential fungicide candidate for managing Fusarium head blight and DON in agriculture.

Histology and RNA Sequencing Provide Insights Into Fusarium Head Blight Resistance in AAC Tenacious

Kirby T. Nilsen et al.

Summary: Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a serious fungal disease affecting wheat and other cereals worldwide. The study found that AAC Tenacious has good resistance to FHB, showing fewer differentially expressed genes, and can activate genes involved in cell wall modification and defense response.

TaNAC032 transcription factor regulates lignin-biosynthetic genes to combat Fusarium head blight in wheat

Nancy Soni et al.

Summary: The NAC transcription factor TaNAC032 plays a crucial role in the resistance of wheat to Fusarium head blight, with silencing of TaNAC032 leading to decreased levels of resistance-related metabolites. This study suggests a potential gene editing strategy for enhancing FHB resistance in susceptible cultivars through manipulation of TaNAC032.

Mechanism of validamycin A inhibiting DON biosynthesis and synergizing with DMI fungicides against Fusarium graminearum

Chuanhong Bian et al.

Summary: In this study, it was discovered that both FgNTH and FgATH are targets of validamycin A (VMA) in Fusarium graminearum, with FgNTH being the main target. Deficiency in FgNTH and FgATH affects the sensitivity to VMA, highlighting their importance in vegetative growth and sexual reproduction. Additionally, the interaction between FgNTH and FgPK, along with the regulation of FgCYP51A and FgCYP51B by FgNTH, contributes to the inhibition of deoxynivalenol (DON) biosynthesis and enhances sensitivity to demethylation inhibitor (DMI) fungicides.

Antifungal Activity of Quinofumelin against Fusarium graminearum and Its Inhibitory Effect on DON Biosynthesis

Qian Xiu et al.

Summary: Quinofumelin shows excellent antifungal activity against Fusarium graminearum, inhibiting both mycelial growth and spore germination, as well as disrupting the formation of the Fusarium toxisome. Additionally, it also inhibits deoxynivalenol (DON) biosynthesis and reduces the expression of DON-related genes in F. graminearum, making it a promising candidate for controlling Fusarium head blight.

Fusarium head blight resistance in European winter wheat: insights from genome-wide transcriptome analysis

Maria Buerstmayr et al.

Summary: The genetic basis of Fusarium head blight (FHB) resistance in wheat involves multiple small to medium effect QTL, with flowering traits playing a significant role. Different wheat genotypes show varying gene expression responses to Fusarium graminearum infection, but there is a core set of genes commonly induced across different resistance levels. Preexisting cell wall components and terpene metabolites contribute to resistance, while excessive gene expression leading to programmed cell death may favor fungal colonization.

Genetic control of Fusarium head blight resistance in two Yangmai 158-derived recombinant inbred line populations

Haisheng Yan et al.

Summary: The elite wheat cultivar Yangmai 158 (Y158) in China has stable resistance to Fusarium head blight (FHB), with six identified QTL associated with better resistance, including one stably expressed QTL for type I resistance and one stably expressed QTL for type II resistance. Genetic variations in plant height and flowering time were also studied, but no QTL associated with FHB resistance were found among them. The SNP markers flanking the resistance QTL have been converted into breeder-friendly PCR-based markers for practical applications in breeding programs.

Integration of meta-QTL discovery with omics: Towards a molecular breeding platform for improving wheat resistance to Fusarium head blight

Summary: This study presents a new strategy for identifying robust and reliable meta-QTL for improving wheat resistance to FHB. Through meta-analysis, 625 original QTL from 113 publications were consolidated into 118 genetic map-based mQTL, from which 77 high-confidence mQTL were selected. By analyzing transcriptomic and proteomic data, 17 genes related to FHB and locus-specific SNP and SSR markers were identified within the selected mQTL intervals.
