Phase-selective staining of model and cell membranes, lipid droplets and lipoproteins with fluorescent solvatochromic pyrene probes

Jesus Sot et al.

Summary: The push-pull solvatochromic pyrene derivatives PA and PK have been successfully applied as polarity-sensitive probes in the study of model membrane vesicles, cells and purified human serum lipoproteins. These probes provide information about lipid order in biomembranes, with the advantage of being excitable by a standard 405 nm laser light. The results from the study showed the capability of PA and PK to report differently on liquid-disordered, liquid-ordered and gel phase bilayers.

Molecular Differences Based on Erythrocyte Fatty Acid Profile to Personalize Dietary Strategies between Adults and Children with Obesity

Iker Jauregibeitia et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the fatty acid profile of red blood cell membranes in children and adults with obesity, finding differences in omega-6 and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids between the two groups. The results suggest that lipidomic differences can potentially inform specific nutritional recommendations for different age groups based on fat intake.

Heterogeneous contributions of change in population distribution of body mass index to change in obesity and underweight NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC)

Maria L. C. Iurilli et al.

Summary: The study found that changes in the prevalence of underweight and obesity were mainly influenced by shifts in the distribution of BMI, with the underweight tail of the BMI distribution being left behind in East and Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, there is a need for policies to address all forms of malnutrition.

Apolipoprotein B and Cardiovascular Disease: Biomarker and Potential Therapeutic Target

Jennifer Behbodikhah et al.

Summary: Apolipoprotein B plays a crucial role in atherogenic lipoproteins, with two major isoforms: apoB48 and apoB100. ApoB concentration serves as a direct measure of circulating atherogenic lipoproteins, independent of particle cholesterol content, making it a more accurate indicator of cardiovascular risk than total cholesterol or LDL cholesterol.

Lipids in Pathophysiology and Development of the Membrane Lipid Therapy: New Bioactive Lipids

Manuel Torres et al.

Summary: Membranes are composed of a lipid bilayer and proteins, acting as a checkpoint for signals and molecules. Lipids play important roles in structure and function in the body, and changes in membrane lipids are linked to significant diseases. Membrane lipid therapy has emerged as a promising technology for therapeutic interventions, with a focus on membrane structure and function.
