Intraepithelial tumour infiltrating lymphocytes are associated with absence of tumour budding and immature/myxoid desmoplastic reaction, and with better recurrence-free survival in stages I-III colorectal cancer

I. A. Gonzalez et al.

Summary: In colorectal cancer, intraepithelial tumour infiltrating lymphocytes (iTILs) and desmoplastic reaction (DR) are independent prognostic factors, with the absence of iTILs and immature/myxoid DR associated with poorer survival outcomes. Combining iTILs with tumour budding (TB) or stromal reaction also showed significant prognostic value in predicting recurrence-free survival (RFS) in CRC patients.

Snail Overexpression Alters the microRNA Content of Extracellular Vesicles Released from HT29 Colorectal Cancer Cells and Activates Pro-Inflammatory State In Vivo

Izabela Papiewska-Pajak et al.

Summary: Understanding the role of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in cancer progression is crucial, as EVs released from cells with migratory properties contain different factors compared to EVs from original tumor cells. These EVs could potentially serve as biomarkers to denote the stage of colorectal cancer (CRC) and be targeted to prevent cancer progression.

470 nm LED Irradiation Inhibits the Invasiveness of CD133-positive Human Colorectal Cancer Stem Cells by Suppressing the Cyclooxygenase-2/prostaglandin E2 Pathway

Sangjoon Mo et al.

Summary: The study showed that blue LED irradiation inhibits the invasiveness of CD133(+) colorectal CSCs by down-regulating the COX-2/PGE2 signaling pathway, leading to reduced expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Summary: Cancer stem cells, particularly in glioblastoma, play a crucial role in tumor resistance to treatment and recurrence. The regulatory mechanisms of glioma stem cells include tumor microenvironment, niche concept, metabolism, immunity, genetics, and epigenetics, which serve as potential targets for future treatments.Understanding the molecular markers and treatment resistance of GSCs in glioblastoma may lead to more effective therapeutic strategies in the future.

Summary: Radiotherapy plays a crucial role in treating rectal cancer, but its effectiveness is limited by radioresistance. Studies have shown that elevated levels of certain tumor stem cell biomarkers are associated with radioresistance and poor prognosis in rectal cancer patients.

Circulating Tumor Cell Clusters Are Cloaked with Platelets and Correlate with Poor Prognosis in Unresectable Pancreatic Cancer

Minji Lim et al.

Summary: CTC clusters with mesenchymal characteristics and platelet marker expression are highly correlated with poor prognosis in patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer. Most CTCs in these patients are cloaked with platelets and the increase in CTC clusters is positively correlated with rapid disease progression, indicating their potential as prognostic markers and a target for personalized disease management.

LncRNA SLCO4A1-AS1 modulates colon cancer stem cell properties by binding to miR-150-3p and positively regulating SLCO4A1

Kun Wu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that SLCO4A1-AS1 competitively binds to miR-150-3p, upregulating SLCO4A1 expression and inhibiting migration, invasion, sphere formation, and tumorigenesis of colon cancer stem cells. This research lays a theoretical foundation for a deeper understanding of colon cancer pathogenesis and identifies potential new therapeutic targets.

Highly Correlated Recurrence Prognosis in Patients with Metastatic Colorectal Cancer by Synergistic Consideration of Circulating Tumor Cells/Microemboli and Tumor Markers CEA/CA19-9

Summary: CTCs can be used for predicting recurrence in CRC patients. CTC clusters/microemboli have higher correlation with metastasis, and when both the number of CTCs and serum CEA levels are high, the prognosis in CRC patients may be worse.

Inverse correlation between PD-L1 expression and LGR5 expression in tumor budding of stage II/III colorectal cancer

Koichi Sato et al.

Summary: The study found that PD-L1-positive patients typically have lower LGR5 expression, and in the PD-L1 positive group, TILs score tended to be higher while TNM stage tended to be lower compared with the PD-L1 negative group. There was no significant difference in Overall Survival between PD-L1-positive and PD-L1-negative groups.

Summary: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease are at increased risk of developing colorectal cancer and are recommended to undergo surveillance colonoscopies. Guidelines from the US, Europe, and Britain offer different surveillance intervals based on individual risk factors. Patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis are at higher risk and should start annual surveillance immediately.

Influence of chronic inflammation on the malignant phenotypes and the plasticity of colorectal cancer cells

Sho Watanabe et al.

Summary: The long-term inflammation model of colon cancer cells established through chronic inflammatory stimulation revealed that chronic inflammation induced apoptosis, suppressed proliferation and stemness, and enhanced invasiveness of the cells via the action of P53. These phenotypic changes were reversible, suggesting that colon cancer cells have higher plasticity than normal intestinal epithelial cells.
