Effectiveness of oral vitamin D supplementation in lessening disease severity among patients with psoriasis: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Xenophon Theodoridis et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of oral vitamin D supplementation in patients with psoriasis. Results showed that vitamin D had a slight effect on improving PASI scores, but subsequent adjustment rendered the results non-significant. Therefore, more randomized controlled trials with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm this effect.

Impact of Etanercept on Vitamin D Status and Vitamin D-binding Protein in Bio-naive Patients with Psoriasis

Maria Siekkeri Vandikas et al.

Summary: Higher levels of serum vitamin D-binding protein have been found in patients with psoriasis compared to healthy controls, suggesting a potential role in inflammation. Treatment with etanercept for 24 weeks resulted in improvements in psoriasis and a decrease in highly sensitive C-reactive protein levels. Higher baseline levels of vitamin D were associated with faster and greater improvement in psoriasis, indicating a potential predictive value for treatment outcomes.

High levels of serum vitamin D-binding protein in patients with psoriasis: A case-control study and effects of ultraviolet B phototherapy

Maria Siekkeri Vandikas et al.

Summary: The role of vitamin D in psoriasis is still controversial, with high levels of DBP, free 25(OH)D and total 25(OH)D found in patients with psoriasis. Despite the increase in 25(OH)D and improvement in symptoms after phototherapy, there was no correlation between DBP and 25(OH)D or disease severity. Further investigation is needed to understand the disturbed vitamin D pathway in psoriasis.

The Free Hormone Hypothesis: When, Why, and How to Measure the Free Hormone Levels to Assess Vitamin D, Thyroid, Sex Hormone, and Cortisol Status

Daniel D. Bikle

Summary: The free hormone hypothesis suggests that only the nonbound fraction of hormones can enter cells and exert biological effects. Measuring free hormone levels may provide a more accurate reflection of hormone status than measuring total levels, especially when binding protein levels or affinities are altered.
