Exogenous phytohormones in the regulation of growth and development of cereals under abiotic stresses

Iryna V. Kosakivska et al.

Summary: Abiotic stresses negatively impact the growth and yield of cereals, leading plants to deploy adaptive strategies where phytohormones play a crucial role. Exogenous phytohormones have the potential to enhance cultivated cereals' tolerance to various abiotic stressors, highlighting the importance of phytohormonal engineering in increasing yields and overcoming losses caused by adverse external factors.

Auxin in Root Development

Suruchi Roychoudhry et al.

Summary: Root system architecture is crucial for plants' below-ground resource capture and adaptation. The plant hormone auxin plays a key role in various aspects of root development, from cellular to whole-root-system level. This review focuses on the multiple gene signaling networks regulated by auxin biosynthesis, conjugation, and transport, which contribute to primary and lateral root development in Arabidopsis. The spatiotemporal regulation of auxin distribution controls transitions between cell division, cell growth, and differentiation, as well as the production of lateral roots. The effects of auxin and its signaling and transport pathways on the control of lateral root gravitropic setpoint angle (GSA), which determines the overall shape of the root system, are also summarized. Additionally, the modulation of auxin biosynthesis, transport, and canonical auxin signaling pathway by environmental conditions and their impact on root developmental plasticity are discussed.

Jasmonates, Ethylene and Brassinosteroids Control Adventitious and Lateral Rooting as Stress Avoidance Responses to Heavy Metals and Metalloids

Camilla Betti et al.

Summary: In response to changing conditions, developmental and environmental signaling networks in plants often converge. Stress-induced hormones, such as JAs, play a crucial role in regulating growth by crosstalk with other signals. The activation of stem cells may be critical in triggering local changes in development in response to avoiding abiotic stress.

Roles of Brassinosteroids in Mitigating Heat Stress Damage in Cereal Crops

Aishwarya Kothari et al.

Summary: Heat stress leads to significant losses in cereal crops and increasing tolerance to high temperatures is necessary for food security. Fine-tuning the action of plant hormones like brassinosteroids can enhance cereal tolerance to heat stress and maintain yields. Understanding the interactions between heat stress responses, growth processes, and hormone signaling can help optimize cereal growth in challenging environments.

Nitric oxide, crosstalk with stress regulators and plant abiotic stress tolerance

Xianrong Zhou et al.

Summary: Nitric oxide is a dynamic gaseous molecule that plays a key role in plant stress responses and signalling, with potential applications in engineering abiotic stress tolerance in crops. It can act as a signaling molecule at low concentrations but can also lead to oxidative stress and cellular damage at higher concentrations. Additionally, nitric oxide has been recognized as a potent stress alleviator and growth regulator in plants.

Auxin requirements for a meristematic state in roots depend on a dual brassinosteroid function

M. Ackerman-Lavert et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the dual effect of BR on auxin, with BR promoting auxin biosynthesis and repressing auxin transcriptional output to maintain root meristem organization. The research also highlights the essential role of BR signaling in outer epidermis and lateral root cap tissues for meristem response to BR, while internal tissues are necessary to control BR levels. The inter-tissue coordination and critical ratio between BR and auxin are crucial for determining the meristematic state.
