Squeezing through the microcirculation: survival adaptations of circulating tumour cells to seed metastasis

Julia Perea Paizal et al.

Summary: This passage explores the impact of mechanical constriction on tumor cells during metastasis, including how forces exerted by capillaries may induce adaptive mechanisms in circulating tumor cells (CTCs) to enhance survival and metastatic potential. The study also highlights how advancements in microfluidics have provided insights into the adaptations developed by CTCs in response to mechanical constraints in the microvasculature, and how these forces may trigger dynamic changes towards a more invasive phenotype in the cells. Understanding the dynamic mechanisms adopted by CTCs within the microcirculation could potentially lead to the development of novel therapeutic approaches for metastatic cancers.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Stress-Inducible Gene Atf3 Dictates a Dichotomous Macrophage Activity in Chemotherapy-Enhanced Lung Colonization

Justin D. Middleton et al.

Summary: In this study using mouse breast cancer models, it was found that the presence or absence of the Atf3 gene determines the activity phenotype of macrophages, which then affects the colonization of cancer cells in the lung under chemotherapy conditions. Chemotherapy can alter the lung's cell retention capacity and affect cancer cell colonization and proliferation by changing the reactive nature of macrophages to cancer cells.
