Aquatic plants and ecotoxicological assessment in freshwater ecosystems: a review

Simona Ceschin et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the current state-of-the-art, limitations, critical issues, and new directions in freshwater plant ecotoxicology. The main issues identified include narrow range of species and endpoints considered, lack of environmental relevance, excessively short exposure times, and potential reactions between toxicants and culture media.

Characterisation of Engineered Nanomaterials in Nano-Enabled Products Exhibiting Priority Environmental Exposure

Raisibe Florence Lehutso et al.

Summary: Analytical limitations have hindered the determination of nanopollution characteristics from nano-enabled products (NEPs), which are actual sources of nanopollution. This study examined the properties of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) in 18 commercial products, revealing their diverse morphologies and negative charges. Despite identifying key ENM characteristics for environmental risk assessment, challenges persist in accurately determining concentrations in NEPs.

Assessment of Nanopollution from Commercial Products in Water Environments

Raisibe Florence Lehutso et al.

Summary: The study investigated the release of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) from commercial products, revealing that the released ENMs were associated with ions and coating agents, with varying sizes and shapes. The total concentrations of released ENMs were influenced by the nature of the product and water quality.

Exposure Media and Nanoparticle Size Influence on the Fate, Bioaccumulation, and Toxicity of Silver Nanoparticles to Higher Plant Salvinia minima

Melusi Thwala et al.

Summary: The study found that the interaction between silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) of different sizes (10nm and 40nm) and the aquatic higher plant Salvinia minima under different exposure media conditions exhibited size-dependant effects, impacting plant growth and chlorophyll production. The toxicity pattern was linked to the dissolution rate of AgNPs, with smaller particles being more toxic relative to larger ones.

Sunscreens' UV Filters Risk for Coastal Marine Environment Biodiversity: A Review

Samuele Caloni et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a rapid growth in tourism, leading to widespread use of sunscreens due to the acknowledgement of the risk of skin cancer from solar UV radiation. However, UV filters in sunscreens have been identified as emerging pollutants in coastal waters, causing toxic effects on marine species. Research progress highlights the adverse impacts of UV filters on the abiotic and biotic compartments in coastal areas.

Developing physicochemical property-based ecotoxicity characterization factors for silver nanoparticles under mesocosm conditions for use in life cycle assessment

Sila Temizel-Sekeryan et al.

Summary: The study aims to calculate characterization factors (CFs) for nAgs by combining colloidal science principles with the USEtox model and integrating them into cradle-to-grave life cycle assessments. Data from published mesocosm conditions are used to calculate effect and fate factors for CFs considering certain physicochemical properties of nAgs in the mesocosm and the composition of aquatic media. Two different scenarios are computed where hetero-aggregation is modeled as either a removal or a transformation process, significantly impacting the final results. A CF range of 2.19 x 10(3)-2.34 x 10(5) PAF m(3) day kg(-1) (PAF: potentially affected fraction) is proposed for polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-coated nAgs based on different scenarios. Sensitivity analysis shows that characteristics of suspended particulate matter greatly affect the fate of nAgs under both scenarios.

Environmentally relevant concentrations of titanium dioxide nanoparticles pose negligible risk to marine microbes

Craig J. Dedman et al.

Summary: Nano-sized titanium dioxide (nTiO2) has a significant impact on marine microbial populations, with higher concentrations leading to declines in cyanobacterial populations but eventual recovery in natural seawater. However, the potential for adverse effects in contamination hotspots cannot be ruled out, and further research is needed to understand the environmental fate and impact of nano-enabled product formulations.
