Longitudinal Sodium MRI of Multiple Sclerosis Lesions: Is there Added Value of Sodium Inversion Recovery MRI

Angelika B. Mennecke et al.

Summary: This study investigated sodium MRI in acute MS lesions using a 3T scanner. The findings showed an increase in nTSC and no change or decrease in nSIR in acute lesions. The baseline sodium IR signal correlated with the recovery or progression of acute lesions.

Frontiers of SodiumMRIRevisited: From Cartilage to Brain Imaging

Olgica Zaric et al.

Summary: Sodium magnetic resonance imaging (Na-23-MRI) is a promising imaging modality that can quantify tissue sodium content noninvasively. The development of technical designs and the use of higher field systems have improved the signal-to-noise ratio and resolution of sodium imaging, expanding its applications in disease diagnoses and treatment evaluations. Despite the challenges, sodium MRI is showing great potential as a reliable biomarker for various pathological conditions.

Altered in vivo brain GABA and glutamate levels are associated with multiple sclerosis central fatigue

Jameen Arm et al.

Summary: This study revealed that fatigue in patients with relapse remitting multiple sclerosis is associated with alterations in GABA and Glx levels in different brain regions, indicating a potential dysregulation of GABAergic and glutamatergic neurotransmission in the pathophysiological mechanism of central fatigue in MS.

2021 MAGNIMS-CMSC-NAIMS consensus recommendations on the use of MRI in patients with multiple sclerosis

Mike P. Wattjes et al.

Summary: The 2021 revision of guidelines on MRI use for multiple sclerosis patients integrates recommendations from various organizations to improve the application of MRI for diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of individuals with multiple sclerosis. It suggests changes in MRI acquisition protocols, cautious use of gadolinium-based contrast agents, and extends recommendations to the use of MRI in children, during pregnancy, and in the post-partum period for patients with multiple sclerosis.

Positron emission tomography in multiple sclerosis - straight to the target

Benedetta Bodini et al.

Summary: With significant progress in treating relapsing-remitting MS, the main challenge now is developing treatments to prevent or delay progressive forms of the disease. A deep understanding of the mechanisms behind neuro-axonal degeneration is crucial for developing therapies for progressive MS. PET imaging plays a key role in providing insights into the mechanisms of irreversible neuro-axonal damage in MS.

Skin sodium is increased in male patients with multiple sclerosis and related animal models

Konstantin Huhn et al.

Summary: Novel MRI techniques reveal the skin as a significant compartment of sodium storage in health and disease, with potential links to MS immunopathology. Increased sodium content in skin, as detected by Na-23-MRI, may predict future disease activity in male patients with RRMS. The skin's role as a storage compartment for sodium and its potential implications in autoimmune neuroinflammation, such as in MS, warrant further investigation.

18F-florbetapir PET/MRI for quantitatively monitoring myelin loss and recovery in patients with multiple sclerosis: A longitudinal study

Min Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the DVR of DWM lesions were lower in MS patients compared to HCs, while NAWM in MS patients had lower FA and higher RD. The decrease in DVR was associated with higher MD, AD, and RD in DWM lesions. Patients' EDSS scores decreased with a reduction in the index of global demyelination.
