Antimicrobial Peptides and Copper(II) Ions: Novel Therapeutic Opportunities

Jasmin Portelinha et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a promising platform for developing novel classes of antibiotics to combat new pathogens and multidrug resistant bacteria. A subclass of AMPs known as ATCUN-AMPs utilize the inherent toxicity of copper ions for a synergistic effect against pathogens. Common structural features in ATCUN-AMPs and their molecular mechanisms are important areas of study for understanding their antimicrobial activity.

Chemical Butterfly Effect Explaining the Coordination Chemistry and Antimicrobial Properties of Clavanin Complexes

Adriana Miller et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that even a minor difference in the nonmetal binding sequence can explain the drastic change in the coordination environment and antimicrobial efficiency of clavanins. The findings shed light on the bioinorganic chemistry of Zn(II) and Cu(II) complexes with histidine-rich antimicrobial peptides, potentially paving the way for the development of more effective antimicrobial agents in the future.

Antimicrobial Peptides: A New Hope in Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Fields

Antonio Moretta et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance is a serious challenge, driving the search for new alternative molecules like AMPs as potential next-generation antibiotics. AMPs, as bioactive small proteins naturally produced by all living organisms, have aroused great interest for their ability to serve as the first line of defense against fungi, viruses, and bacteria.
