Heart Matters: Cardiac Dysfunction and Other Autonomic Changes in Parkinson's Disease

Valeria C. Goncalves et al.

Summary: It has been over 200 years since James Parkinson first described Parkinson's disease. Despite improvements in knowledge, there is currently no way to prevent the progressive nature of the disease. Early diagnosis through recognition of non-motor symptoms is crucial for better understanding and management of the disease, including its relationship to cardiovascular parameters.

Heart and brain interactions Pathophysiology and management of cardio-psycho-neurological disorders

Renate B. Schnabel et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases and mental health disorders have high prevalence rates, but possible interactions between their pathophysiological mechanisms are rarely considered in diagnosis, prognostic assessment, and treatment. Specific syndromes, such as Takotsubo syndrome, illustrate how pre-existing neurological or psychiatric illness can predispose to CVD development. Multidisciplinary collaborations are crucial for comprehensive understanding and targeted treatment.

Cardiac tyrosine hydroxylase activation and MB-COMT in dyskinetic monkeys

Lorena Cuenca-Bermejo et al.

Summary: As the population ages, the impact of age-associated disorders is increasing, with cardiovascular diseases and neurodegenerative disorders showing high social and economic burdens. Studies have found interrelations between these disorders, such as dysfunction of the cardiovascular nervous system in Parkinson's disease. Research on the dopaminergic system and key proteins in the heart suggests potential implications for cardiac noradrenergic changes observed in MPTP treatment.

Parkinson's disease

Bastiaan R. Bloem et al.

Summary: Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative condition with diverse causes and clinical presentations. Diagnosis is clinically based, and treatment goals vary from person to person, emphasizing the need for personalized management. Currently, there is no therapy to slow down or arrest the progression of Parkinson's disease.

Decreased dynamin-related protein 1-related mitophagy induces myocardial apoptosis in the aging heart

Xin Wei et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether Drp1 is involved in inducing apoptosis by regulating mitophagy in aging myocardium. Results showed that decreased Drp1 levels led to mitochondrial damage and apoptosis in senescent cells. Additionally, Drp1-mediated mitophagy inhibited the PINK1/Parkin pathway in senescent cells, indicating that insufficient Drp1 induces cardiomyocyte apoptosis by inhibiting mitophagy in the aging heart.

Hidden phenotypes of PINK1/Parkin knockout mice

Swagatika Paul et al.

Summary: Although PINK1 and Parkin KO mouse models do not faithfully recapitulate early onset forms of Parkinson's disease, they have provided insights into the roles of PINK1 and Parkin in mitochondrial quality control and function in various tissues beyond the brain. Despite being generated over a decade ago, these models are still being used to creatively elucidate the cell-type specific functions of these proteins. Recently, these mouse models have revealed the contributions of these proteins to innate immunity and cancer phenotypes.

Cardiac 18F-Dopamine PET Distinguishes PD with Orthostatic Hypotension from Parkinsonian MSA

Abhishek Lenka et al.

Summary: The study investigates the utility of cardiac F-18-dopamine PET scanning for differentiating PD + OH from MSA-P, showing a high sensitivity and specificity in separating the two conditions. This suggests that cardiac F-18-dopamine PET scanning can be an efficient tool for distinguishing PD + OH from MSA-P.
