Blood and Salivary MicroRNAs for Diagnosis of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Dingshan Liu et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis found that blood and salivary miRNAs have moderate diagnostic accuracy for oral squamous cell carcinoma. Blood miRNAs showed higher sensitivity and specificity compared to salivary miRNAs. The findings suggest that miRNAs in blood and saliva could serve as less invasive and relatively reliable diagnostic tools for detecting OSCC.

The role of differentially expressed salivary microRNA in oral squamous cell carcinoma. A systematic review

Natheer Al Rawi et al.

Summary: This systematic review identified differentially expressed miRNAs in saliva of oral cancer patients that could potentially serve as biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). However, further controlled clinical trials with large sample sizes are needed to validate these findings.

Genetic Drivers of Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Aberrant Splicing Events, Mutational Burden, HPV Infection and Future Targets

Zodwa Dlamini et al.

Summary: Head and neck cancers, including HNSCC, arise from various locations and are the sixth most diagnosed cancers worldwide. The major risk factors are infection with HPV, tobacco use, and alcohol consumption. Changes in alternative splicing and ncRNA patterns play a crucial role in the development and progression of HNSCC.

Potential Non-Invasive Biomarkers for Early Diagnosis of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Valentina Dikova et al.

Summary: This study investigated the levels of certain salivary cytokines as potential biomarkers for distinguishing between oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), oral leukoplakia (OL), and healthy individuals. The findings suggest that IL-6, IL-8, TNF-alpha, HCC-1, and PF-4 in saliva may be useful in differentiating between these conditions, with IL-6 and TNF-alpha potentially indicating the progression of OSCC, especially in the presence of neck metastases.

Salivary Cytokines as Biomarkers for Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Systematic Review

Elena Ferrari et al.

Summary: The prognosis of patients with oral squamous carcinoma depends largely on the stage at diagnosis, with early detection being crucial for reducing the need for extensive surgery and improving disease-free survival. Saliva, as a readily available source of biomarkers, is considered ideal for the development of non-invasive and highly accurate diagnostic tests due to its close interaction with oral cells. Cytokines such as IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-alpha present at higher levels in the saliva of OSCC patients compared to healthy controls may serve as the basis for rapid tests for early diagnosis of oral cancer.

Summary: Exosomal miRs are promising biomarkers for oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer detection. Among them, miR-10b-5p, miR486-5p, miR-24-3p, and miR-200a are identified as the most useful ones in saliva sample examination.

Inflammatory Mediators in Oral Cancer: Pathogenic Mechanisms and Diagnostic Potential

Sven E. E. Niklander

Summary: Approximately 15% of cancers are related to the inflammatory process, with growing evidence supporting a link between oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and chronic inflammation. Different oral inflammatory conditions predispose individuals to OSCC development by containing various factors that promote tumor growth and invasion. The focus of research lies in understanding the activation of inflammatory molecules and transcription factors in OSCC, highlighting their translational potential.
