Ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy pathophysiology through microRNA-16-5p

Maria Calderon-Dominguez et al.

Summary: The study found that miR-16 levels are upregulated in iDCM patients and are associated with clinical variables of iDCM. In vitro experiments showed that overexpression of miR-16 increased apoptosis, reduced cell viability, and induced autophagy under ER stress conditions. This suggests that autophagy may be a cellular attempt to maintain homeostasis in response to ER stress-related protein abnormalities before apoptosis occurs.
