Polydopamine modified silk fibroin 3-D anode for enhanced microbial fuel cell operation

Priya Mukherjee et al.

Summary: In this study, a modified silk fibroin anode was used for MFC power generation by coating with polydopamine. The results showed that the modified anode had good conductivity, flexibility, 3D geometry with enriched macroporosity, biocompatibility, and hydrophilicity. The anode with the highest polydopamine concentration exhibited the highest bacterial colonization and power production. 16S rRNA sequencing analysis revealed that Bacillus dominated the microbial colonies in the anode and anolyte. The modified silk fibroin anode showed potential as an effective anode material for real-time MFC operation.

Rhein incorporated silk fibroin hydrogels with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory efficacy to promote healing of bacteria-infected burn wounds

Chuanjin Yin et al.

Summary: A high-performance dressing with both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties was developed by incorporating an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial drug, rhein, into a silk fibroin matrix. The resulting hydrogel dressing exhibited a fibrous network nanostructure, high water content, and water adsorption ability, making it suitable for treating bacterial infected wounds and accelerating wound healing.

Characterization of undegraded and degraded silk fibroin and its significant impact on the properties of the resulting silk biomaterials

Hai-Yan Wang et al.

Summary: This study compared undegraded SF and degraded SF, finding differences in viscosity, surface tension, and elongation between the two. SEM analysis revealed both uSF and dSF existed in aqueous solution as micelles with a diameter of approximately 30 nm. In terms of catalytic activity and cell culture, degraded SF showed better performance.

Extraction of silk fibroin and glycidyl methacrylate grafting on silk fibroin optimization of SF-g-GMA for meniscus tissue engineering

Jiraporn Sinna et al.

Summary: In this study, silk fibroin fibers were dissolved in a calcium chloride solution and the effects of CaCl2 concentration and the ratio between silk fibroin and CaCl2 on solubility were investigated. Dialysis was used to remove salt and purify the dissolved silk fibroin, and the efficiency of salt removal was influenced by the dialysis time. Glycidyl methacrylate was grafted onto silk fibroin through trans-esterification, as confirmed by FTIR.
