Abiotic stress responses in plants

Huiming Zhang et al.

Summary: Plants face abiotic stresses like drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures, which greatly impact their distribution, growth, and crop productivity. Recent research has revealed the complex molecular mechanisms involved in plants' responses to these stresses, including sensing, signaling, transcription, translation, and post-translational modifications. This knowledge can be utilized to enhance crop resilience and sustainability through genetic, chemical, and microbial approaches.

Y2SK2- and SK3-type dehydrins from Agapanthus praecox act as protectants to improve plant cell viability during cryopreservation

Di Zhang et al.

Summary: Dehydrins added during the dehydration step in plant cryopreservation can improve cell viability by reducing oxidative stress damage and enhancing antioxidant levels. Specifically, recombinant DHN proteins Y2SK2 and SK3 from Agapanthus praecox were found to double the survival rate of Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings after cryopreservation by decreasing plasma membrane damage and reducing malondialdehyde and H2O2 contents while increasing GSH content in plant cells. Additionally, these dehydrins enhance antioxidant enzyme activity and expression, as well as promote H2O2 scavenging capacity, ultimately improving plant cell survival post-cryopreservation.

Regulation of antioxidant enzymes and osmo-protectant molecules by salt and drought responsive genes in Bambusa balcooa

Bakhtiyar Alam Syed et al.

Summary: This study focused on the vegetative propagation of Bamboo under salt and drought stress conditions to understand the regulation of antioxidant enzymes' genes. The findings suggest that enhancing antioxidant enzymes and osmo-protectant molecules may help in promoting the cultivation of bio-energy crops on marginal salty and drought lands in India. The study also revealed the correlation between gene regulation, physiological changes, and plant health indicators under different salt and drought stress conditions.

Dehydrin in the past four decades: From chaperones to transcription co-regulators in regulating abiotic stress response

Poonam Tiwari et al.

Summary: Dehydrins are crucial proteins in combating abiotic stresses in plants, stabilizing biomolecules and membranes, as well as regulating stress-responsive genes and participating in histone modification. They have been known for almost 30 years to have chaperone functions and play key roles during dehydration stress. Recent research has suggested that dehydrins may have additional functions beyond their traditional roles, such as participation in gene regulation and epigenetic processes.
