Cadmium-induced dysfunction of the blood-brain barrier depends on ROS-mediated inhibition of PTPase activity in zebrafish

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: Accumulation of cadmium in the blood increases the risk of neurological diseases, but the mechanism of how cadmium crosses the blood-brain barrier is unclear. Studies have shown that cadmium chloride can affect the development and function of the BBB in zebrafish, leading to cerebral hemorrhage, increased permeability, and abnormal vascular formation, as well as disrupting cell-cell junctional morphology.

Blood-Brain Barrier Dynamics to Maintain Brain Homeostasis

Marta Segarra et al.

Summary: The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a critical gatekeeper between the blood and the brain parenchyma, maintaining brain homeostasis by dynamically adjusting its tightness. BBB integrity is adjusted at critical stages in life and can be influenced by stressors such as nutrition, environment, and psychological stress.

Thermal acclimation alters Na+/K+-ATPase activity in a tissue-specific manner in Drosophila melanogaster

Alexandra Cheslock et al.

Summary: The study found that the activity of Na+/K+-ATPase decreased in the thorax and head of cold-acclimated flies, potentially assisting in maintaining K+ homeostasis and membrane potential across muscle membranes. Although the changes resulted in a delay in the onset of coma in cold-acclimated flies, the reduced activity of Na+/K+-ATPase in the brain did not align with expectations.

Astrocyte-Endotheliocyte Axis in the Regulation of the Blood-Brain Barrier

Augustas Pivoriunas et al.

Summary: The evolution of the blood-brain barrier is closely related to the centralization of the nervous system. Different animals have different ways of forming barriers, with the vertebrates having an endothelial barrier secured by tight and adherent junctions. Astrocytes communicate with endothelial cells through secretion, regulating the integrity of the blood-brain barrier.

Neuroprotective Effects of Thiamine and Precursors with Higher Bioavailability: Focus on Benfotiamine and Dibenzoylthiamine

Margaux Sambon et al.

Summary: Thiamine thioesters, such as benfotiamine (BFT) and dibenzoylthiamine (DBT), have shown potential benefits in treating neurodegenerative diseases with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Recent studies suggest that DBT may be even more efficient than BFT in terms of anti-inflammatory potency. These thiamine thioesters have pleiotropic properties and may lead to promising advancements in neurodegenerative, neurodevelopmental, and psychiatric conditions.

ATP-binding cassette transporters at the zebrafish blood-brain barrier and the potential utility of the zebrafish as an in vivo model

Jordan M. Hotz et al.

Summary: The blood-brain barrier is a network of specialized cells that protect the brain from toxins, allowing only essential molecules to enter. It employs various mechanisms to prevent harmful substances from entering, such as tight junctions and energy-dependent transporters like ABC transporters. Research on ABC transporters in zebrafish is ongoing to understand their role in the BBB and their potential as a model system for further study.
