Neurobehavioral and Ultrastructural Changes Induced by Phytosynthesized Silver-Nanoparticle Toxicity in an In Vivo Rat Model

Razvan Vlad Opris et al.

Summary: The study found that silver nanoparticles synthesized with Cornus mas L. extract induced dose- and time-dependent anxiety-like behavior in rats, along with severe ultrastructural changes in neurons, astrocytes, and capillaries in the brain. Immunohistochemistry revealed astrogliosis with altered cell morphology. Changes in TNF alpha, IL-6, MDA, and CAT activity were significant, varying depending on brain region and time post exposure.

Neurotoxicity of silver nanoparticles in the animal brain: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Atousa Janzadeh et al.

Summary: This study found that AgNPs can cause neuronal death after entering the brain, regardless of their size, and this effect can last for a long time. Neurons from embryonic animals exposed to AgNPs during pregnancy were affected as much as animals exposed to AgNPs themselves, with observed toxic effects on memory and cognitive function. The main mechanisms of AgNPs neurotoxicity are believed to be inflammation and increased oxidative stress leading to apoptosis.

Neurotoxicity of metal-containing nanoparticles and implications in glial cells

Xiaoru Chang et al.

Summary: Metal-containing nanoparticles are widely used in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of central nervous system diseases, but their neurotoxicity, especially on glial cells, is a cause for concern. Dysfunctions in microglial cells and astrocytes can damage the brain and contribute to the development of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The mechanisms of neurotoxicity involve inflammation, oxidative stress, DNA damage, and cell death in glial cells, ultimately increasing the burden on the central nervous system.

Disruption of brain conductivity and permittivity and neurotransmitters induced by citrate-coated silver nanoparticles in male rats

Azza Attia et al.

Summary: This study revealed that 26.9 nm citrate-coated AgNPs can access the brain of mice, causing damage to brain conductivity and relative permittivity along with high cellular toxicity. The findings raise concerns about the neurotoxic effects of citrate-coated AgNPs on the brain and suggest further investigation into axonal relevant signal transduction levels in future studies.

Developmental exposure to silver nanoparticles leads to long term gut dysbiosis and neurobehavioral alterations

Zhen Lyu et al.

Summary: The developmental exposure to AgNPs results in increased likelihood of engaging in repetitive behaviors and reductions in resident microglial cells in offspring. Additionally, offspring exposed to AgNPs exhibit increased body fat, along with significant changes in gut microbial profiles, which are linked to behavioral and metabolic alterations.

Silver Nanoparticles Stable to Oxidation and Silver Ion Release Show Size-Dependent Toxicity In Vivo

Brittany Cunningham et al.

Summary: This study designed stable AgNPs that are resistant to surface oxidation and Ag+ ion release. Toxicity studies revealed size- and concentration-dependent effects of AgNPs, with smaller nanoparticle sizes leading to increased mortality and sublethal morphological abnormalities. This study provided valuable insights into the impact of AgNP size on toxicity in the absence of Ag+ ions.
