An update on biosynthesis and regulation of carotenoids in plants

Ramaraj Sathasivam et al.

Summary: Carotenoids are important pigments synthesized in various organisms, including plants, algae, bacteria, and yeast, playing critical roles in photosynthesis and hormone production. While most carotenogenic genes are identified in plants, the regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. Research on plant carotenoid biosynthesis provides valuable insights for biotechnology applications.

Genome-Wide Identification and Analysis of the MYB Transcription Factor Gene Family in Chili Pepper (Capsicum spp.)

Magda L. Arce-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The study conducted comprehensive analyses of the MYB family in chili pepper, identifying 235 non-redundant MYB proteins and revealing their functions and differential expression within the transcription factor family. Results suggest that CaMYB genes may play a regulatory role in the biosynthesis of phenylpropanoid, capsaicinoid, and vitamin C.

The pungent-variable sweet chili pepper 'Shishito' (Capsicum annuum) provides insights regarding the relationship between pungency, the number of seeds, and gene expression involving capsaicinoid biosynthesis

Fumiya Kondo et al.

Summary: The study found that 'Shishito' peppers with fewer seeds had a larger fluctuation in capsaicinoid content, indicating a connection between seed number and pungency. Analysis of gene expression revealed that 11 genes were significantly correlated with capsaicinoid concentration, potentially upregulating capsaicinoid biosynthesis.

Comprehensive transcriptome-based characterization of differentially expressed genes involved in carotenoid biosynthesis of different ripening stages of Capsicum

Quan-Hui Li et al.

Summary: The color formation of red and orange pepper fruits is closely related to the composition and content of carotenoids, with significantly higher levels of zeaxanthin, beta-cryptoxanthin, beta-carotene, and capsanthin found in red peppers compared to orange peppers, and higher levels of lutein in orange peppers compared to red peppers. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified to be involved in the biosynthesis of carotenoids, phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, and phenylalanine metabolism. Key genes such as CHYB1 and CCS were found to play significant roles in carotenoid biosynthesis during fruit development. Additionally, transcription factors such as F-box protein SKIP23, GATA transcription factor 26, and others may be involved in the regulation of carotenoid metabolism pathway in pepper fruit color formation.

Insight into ripening-associated transcription factors in tomato: A review

Changxia Li et al.

Summary: The regulation of fruit ripening, including the involvement of transcription factors such as NAC, MADS-box, and bHLH factors, as well as ethylene- and auxin-related factors, plays a crucial role in controlling fruit quality and shelf life. Protein-protein interactions also modulate tomato fruit ripening. Advances in RNAi and CRISPR/Cas technology offer promising prospects for crop improvement through mutation breeding. Identification of key transcription factors in tomato ripening has expanded our understanding of fruit ripening processes.

Genome-wide identification of the Capsicum bHLH transcription factor family: discovery of a candidate regulator involved in the regulation of species-specific bioactive metabolites

Renjian Liu et al.

Summary: This study identified a total of 107 CabHLHs from the Capsicum annuum genome, classified into 15 groups. Expression profiles of specific CabHLHs were found to be associated with carotenoid biosynthesis in pericarp and capsaicinoid accumulation in the placenta. Yeast two-hybrid assays confirmed interactions between some CabHLHs and MYB31, a master regulator of capsaicinoid biosynthesis.

Capsaicinoid biosynthesis in the pericarp of chili pepper fruits is associated with a placental septum-like transcriptome profile and tissue structure

Yoshiyuki Tanaka et al.

Summary: The biosynthesis of capsaicinoid in the pericarp of chili pepper fruits occurs with an ambiguous boundary in the placental septum and pericarp. Some extremely pungent varieties show similarities in morphology between the pericarp and placental septum. These findings contribute to a better understanding of capsaicinoid production in chili pepper fruits.

Transcriptomic analysis of a wild and a cultivated varieties of Capsicum annuum over fruit development and ripening

Fernando G. Razo-Mendivil et al.

Summary: In this study, a transcriptomic analysis on wild and cultivated pepper varieties at two fruit maturation stages revealed that the two peppers showed similar gene expression patterns but with differences in genes related to shape, size, ethylene, and secondary metabolites biosynthesis. Domestication of chilli pepper could lead to specific changes in gene expression related to desired commercial traits such as shape, size, and secondary metabolite production.
