Revealing the substitution preference of zinc in ordinary Portland cement clinker phases: A study from experiments and DFT calculations

Jianping Zhu et al.

Summary: The research investigated the doping behaviors of Zn in OPC clinker and found that Zn can replace Ca in C3S and C2S, and Fe in C(4)AF, resulting in a decrease in the content of C(3)A. The similarity in electron contributions and small structure distortions between Zn and host ions restrict its solubility in C(4)AF.

Impact of limestone fineness on cement hydration at early age

Yosra Briki et al.

Summary: The study found that fine limestone has a significant impact on cement hydration, effectively offsetting the dilution effect caused by the decrease of clinker amount, while the influence of coarse limestone on cement hydration is limited to dilution effect. A linear correlation between strength and gel space ratio was observed for the combination of fine and coarse limestone systems. Despite similar specific surface area, limestone is found to be more effective than quartz in enhancing cement hydration.

Physical and chemical effects of isopropanol exchange in cement-based materials

Zhidong Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that isopropanol (IPA) has some effects on the chemical components of cement-based materials, which can be reduced by shortening the exchange duration. Experimental results suggest that the exchange duration for microstructural studies can correspond to the time when 99% of the water at the sample center is replaced.

Influences of interaction between cement and ionic paraffin emulsion on cement hydration

Jinyang Huo et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the influences of the interaction between cement and ionic paraffin emulsions on cement hydration, finding that anionic and cationic paraffin emulsions have stronger hindrance effects than nonionic paraffin emulsion on hydration kinetics. The stronger the adsorption between ionic paraffin emulsions and cement, the lower the hydration rate, hydration degree, and the main diffraction peak intensity of hydration products.

Elastic and thermodynamic properties of the major clinker phases of Portland cement: Insights from first principles calculations

Ngoc Lan Mai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical and thermodynamic properties of four major phases of Portland cement using density functional theory calculations. The results were in good agreement with experimental data, and also provided insights into electron density, spin polarization, atomic charge, as well as free energy and entropy properties. Further development is needed to enhance the established DFT models for predicting the mechanical properties of the ferrite phase in Portland clinker.
